Sugar in almost invisible heat

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Just wondering if anyone else has had a B that has done into a second heat 6 mos after the first with barely any blood. I thought one of the other dogs had hurt themselves as the blood was intermittent, but last night I was with Sugar and she dropped one spot of blood. I had been swiping her and there has been nothing there. This has been going on for about 10 days. Good thing I don't have an intact male around!!

  • I have had all of my girls come in twice a year. But it isn't always predictable who will go in, and how far apart it will be. I think the closest I have had was Blondie came in in late November two years ago, and then the following April. So, five months apart? I guess…but she is normally. She has also come in July, and then again in December. And, it seems to me, the older they get, the less blood they have. My young girls spot everywhere...but Blondie seems like she doesn't drop much blood, unless she is sleeping, in our bed, on light colored sheets...ugh!

  • Well, I'm thinking now that I should have noticed the signs-bad breath, miserable, cranky, etc. DDDUUUUUGGGGGGHHHHHHH! But she's only 17 mos. WAAAAAHHHHH! No more puppy! My baby grew up!

  • bad breath? I've never noticed that.

    Jazz does get reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeal bitchy with Gypsy, though.

    Jazz has gone into heat twice a year since she was 6 months old. She's never bled much, IMO, just a few drops here and there – just enough to annoy my husband {think Felix Unger w/out the honking, LOL}

  • Yeah, really bad breath! I know when she was in heat the first time she lost a lot of iron, I could literally smell it. And her breath wasn't too good, probably from cleaning herself.

    @tanza -- I know. They also don't typically have one in June, which is why I was asking about whether she had whelped last cycle. I don't think we have a lot to go on. Not being critical, but "my dog seems to be in heat for over a month" doesn't provide a lot of information and could mean a lot of different things.

    We had Juniper spayed about a month ago at 8 months old. Everything went well and her scar is almost healed…thankfully she doesn't seem to have lost any of her zeal! The vet said her sex organs looked as developed as a 3 y/o dog and it was they were the most mature looking sex organs he'd ever seen in 20 years of spaying and neutering. Believe it or not she went into a false labor after the spaying; about a week after the surgery her teats swelled up and when we took her to the vet he apparently squeezed out some milk! She was acting fairly normal but it was just as odd as it sounds! The vet said its rare but it can happen after a spaying because the hormone changes are similar to that of post-delivery. I did some research online and apparently false labors are common among wild wolves where the non-pregnant females will go into a false labor to provide milk and nurturing for offspring in the pack that are not their own.

    My pup's first heat was when she was a little over 10 months old. She had been around many girls that were in heat a month and a half before she went in and I had hoped that she would be in and over her heat before she returned to me from her show road trip LOL - no such luck. :D:D.

    @tanza: And for those of you with "elders" note that with age they do become more sensitive to heat…. while mine when younger would lay in the sun at 100 degrees... they don't now at 14+... also I find that they pant more when it is really hot That's good info…I forget about how the age makes a big difference with such things.

    Both of mine came in again this year, but in my experience, if they are around another bitch basenji that is in season, it may bring the others in also. Mine showed no inclination to going into season, and yet, first one and then the other! They did go to a show where there was another bitch in season before this.
