Setting up for Success in training

Show Off Your Dog
  • Uzie has a small bag of tricks so far, high five (left paw); wave(right paw), jump, almost lay dead with the gun pointing at ya; but today we are working on the 'Stay'. Now never put your dog in a place where they may be uncomfortable and therefore break the command of STAY, never in the hot sun, ant hills, wet grass (oh basenji heavens no!!), and make sure it is in a place where the time spent there will help reinforce the command…...:D

@tanza @debradownsouth Exactly what I meant. Like a child, you cannot expect a pup to do something their body has not grown enough to do. It's been years since I've had a puppy in the house. "Bug" came to me at 18months, well past potty training. (Thank heavens!)

She is not too old to train, but even saying that, she is a basenji, and no matter the age, a bored basenji will find things to entertain herself, often things we would prefer she not touch. A companion helps, but even so, given temptation a basenji will usually go for it. Think "baby-proof" your house with a baby who can climb, leap, dig and chew. As said above by others, toys which present a challenge will also help.

I am lucky with my guy. Although he has attempted digging a few times and been told "no", he doesn't take advantage of my absence to pursue the habit. One exception was when I assume he was cold, and he dug his way under the comforter on the bed, managing to do some damage to the foamy we have on the bed to make it softer. (never assume the bed that felt soft enough in the showroom will be so when you get it home! :) ) He has free run of the house and seldom abuses the privilege. Obviously if the damage occurs when you are gone the only solution is to restrict his access to the things he is likely to harm. Or suffer the consequences. ;)

@snorky998: Looks like the video worked well. Buddy recalled to the TV instantly:D Now all you have to do is imitate the wonderfully silly voice and he'll come running every time:D Let us know how that works out!! Thanks for the clip. It was adorable. That's correct! The high pitched "SPREEEEE"! That's the dogs name (Spree) in the video. So it will have to be "BUDDEEEEE! I will have to work on the high pitch.
