Harmony Hounds, GA

Breeder Talk
  • Harmony Hounds in GA is NOT the place to go for well socalized Basenjis. She is only trying to make money. Her prices are rediculious. She says her Basenjis are "RAISED AROUND THREE CHILDREN AND ARE SOCIALIZED FROM THE DAY THEY ARE BORN." Yeah, they are socialized from the day they are born by the same 3 children. No "breeder" with 3 different types of dogs can give Basenjis the attention they truly need. This is a puppy mill. She breeds dogs that have biting issues. Please reconsider before buying any dog from her. From personal experience, there are better breeders out there! Check out Jokbua Basenjis. Wonderful breeder and wonderful human being.

  • Sadly, the public has little knowledge of good breeders vs bad ones.
The folks who do their homework do find out, but it takes some time and we live in
the "I want it right now" society. Sigh.

  • As noted, in many other posts, check out the breeder and do not just go to one, visit breeders (responsible breeders) even if they don't have a puppy for your at that time… you will learn hopefully what is a responsible breeder is and how puppies should be raised and what to look for...

I can also say, that I suppect that she also is using a stud that she purchased and came from a Fox Terrier/Basenji cross in New Mexico area.... just judging by the pictures of the pups on her website last year.

@senjisilly just now saw your reply. Thanks for the pedigree website. I knew about it and it’s a great resource.

@tanza I don't believe there was a limit to the number of letters, though I wasn't paying much attention to whether the field stopped me from continuing. Tanza is nice! I was actually surprised no one has claimed the name :D

@tanza I'm definitely attending the next show as a recon trip. Not sure how the work here but if they're similarly easy to enter as the ones in the US, I do want to show Roux! LOL that's a hilarious saying; I absolutely appreciate a smart lady over cluelessness haha :face_with_tongue:

@lindenbaum I've long forgotten about this thread. If I am remembering correctly, I left it up so that people could read the flags that it may be a puppy mill and be able to make their own decision regarding that. I am deliberately wording that as "... may be... " because I do not have any personal interaction with "HH" and therefore cannot speak to it. (please note that I removed your "HH available breeds" list, no offense)

IMHO, any breeder that I was thinking about that let their dogs end up in rescue instead of taking them back would be a breeder I would want to avoid. Add to it that the website doesn't list any health testing (I don't know a responsible breeder that doesn't list or link to their health testing). And $1200 is crazy high IMO, I didn't pay that last year when I got my pup from a responsible breeder that does full health testing. As well, my pup's breeder doesn't charge any different between show potential & pet pups. I know you have been thinking about a pup since the summer, did you have no luck with any BCOA breeders. Maybe not in Georgia, but what about the Carolinas, Virginia, Florida. You might need to cast your net just a little wider. I don't have my BCOA roster (has more people listed than what is on the BCOA website) handy, but when I get home this evening, I can list some breeders in surrounding states that you could contact and check with to see if they are having litters. Also, did you check w/Robin @ Sherwood to see if she knew of any breeders having litters that might have a r/w pup. I will say that normally by now, the waiting lists are full, but you never know if there might be a cancellation.
