Solid Gold & Avoderm Dry Dog Foods

    Has anyone used either of these dry foods? if so, what do you think?

    Solid Gold Holistic Blend Adult Maintenance-States for Senior & Less Active-Oatmeal & Fish-This is low in fat-6% but has 18% Protein.

    Avoderm Puppy-Chicken Meal & Brown Rice

    I am able to pick up a bag of each 50% off because the bags are close to expiring.

    I used Solid Gold for many years with my last 2 Basenjis in the 90s and used the avoderm adult a little with my current Basenji. They were OK but the dogs after awhile then would develop allergies over time. I stopped using any kind of dry because I don't think he's digesting the grains of any kind including rice, oatmeal or barley and dry is way too processed. When I took Buddy off dry his health and coat improved and he never chews, licks or itches any more. That's just my experience with it. His blood panel/urinalysis last year showed some problems too. I had the urinalysis redone a month later, being off dry and everything looked good. Now tomorrow I'm having his blood drawn for another panel to see how everything looks so we'll see. I just feed high quality wet that has no grains, some frozen organic raw and some home cooked food as well. The blood panel should tell me if it's working. I'll post the findings.
    Now I don't know if it's an individual genetics thing but my first Basenji (75-92) ate nothing but dry. I actually fed her Avoderm back in 82. I actually bought it from the health food store as they didn't have the pet stores like they do now. She lived to be 17-1/2 with very few health problems.

    I just got a call from the vet on Buddy's blood panel results and all looks good. I'm going to continue with the diet I'm feeding him since it seems to be working. His thyroid test last June from Dr Dodds also looked good. If your Basenji is experiencing any skin, coat or digestion problems try eliminating all grains including rice and see how it goes.

    I was feeding my Basenji brand blue and she started getting crystals in her kidneys. With the recommendation from my pet store owner (Pet Ranch), switched to Nature's Variety Instinct RAW. Withing 2 months…all crystals are gone. Now Basenji, Rotty, and Puppy Mastiff/Pitt all get Nature's Variety. Their coats are very shiney and teeth are so white.

    @Ellusionz: I've just swapped my dog to Wellness Core. It's high in protein which I was told is really good for the basenji breed with how active they are. Also grain-free. But they say it shouldn't be fed to dogs younger than a year. They sell it at Petco. There's also the regular Wellness that Petsmart carries thats been rated just below the Core. I researched the ingredients in the brands on dogfoodchat.com I thought about going with a high protien …. i'll deff look into that for next time after this huge bag is done :)

    I agree with Pat. If the 'best' dogfood gives your dog gas, or loose stools, it isn't the best for that dog. Like Petra said, you feed a good to great quality food, hi or medium protein, whatever your dog likes that agrees with them.

    @agilebasenji: To clarify, I'm not feeding my dogs differently because they are show/performance dogs; I'm feeding them differently because that is what works for the individual. Where I see feeding a dog differently because it is a performance/working dog (NOT a conformation/show dog) is where the dog is burning TONS of calories. Examples would be a working border collie/kepie or, perhaps, a greyhound that is being run many times a week (I don't know how they work things at the track), a working military/border patrol dog that is logging in miles of work daily, etc. My performance/show dogs are more weekend warriors by comparison. Training less than an hour everyday (not that I really train 7 days a week), hardly needs a special diet (IMHO). I will say I feed the basenjis more in the winter than the summer; they need more calories when it's cold. I also cook an egg on show/agility/coursing mornings, but that's because Digital is a picky boy and I need him to having something in his tummy when he's performing in agility/coursing. And it has just sort of carried over even though Miss Zest would never turn down food of any sort. Of course that's not too different from most weekends since I usually cook a big breakfast on Sat and Sun and everyone gets a bite of egg then. However, I will say I know of some people who do feed their current show dogs a better diet than the non-show dogs, which I find very sad. Well put, especially your last comment… I totally agree.... and pets/companions deserve the best we can feed them... no different then show/performace dogs...
