    On another thread someone was asking about harnesses and Soulmate suggested a source at this site http://www.juliusk9.hu/en/ (which shows some military training of dogs).
    While there I was looking at some of the pictures in their gallery … click on "gendarmerie" and take a careful look at the 4th picture in the top row. :eek:

    As far as I know, the Austrian and Swiss Military has a few units which have dogs to help to defend the borders in the Alps. As there are real high mountains the fastest way to get there is to drop soldiers and dogs with the plane….. I am seriously fascinated about how the dogs manage to deal with these actions.

    I do know people which work with their dogs for alpine rescueing organizations to look for people which have been run over by avalanches. They also get there often by helicopter. The dogs are really well trained and love what they do....

    But to get back to the harness: these harnesses have been tested and are used in Military and Police Units. I guess they really are good for the dogs and as well for the handlers.... ;-)

    Ohh I'm sooo calling up my old roomates about this.. many of my guy friends are doing their mandatory service right now - I'll see if I can scrape up some more information on those "doggie drops"!:eek:

    Charlie D. and I took our 2 adult Bs, our first Bs, to training classes in the 90s. The dogs reluctantly passed but it was suggested that we retake the classes. The stay was the hardest command! One B had a high prey drive and wanted to go after the small white fluffy dogs and the other one was so friendly and had a thing for larger dogs that he would sit in the ring and turn his head around to watch the large dogs in the other ring. Once the teacher had to come up and wave her hand in front of his face to distract him! I think he wanted to be a large dog. He later earned his CGC although was told he was too friendly and both became excellent lure coursers with titles. We never did retake the training classes. I do not think I could take the embarassment! Jennifer

    @Robin_n_Jack: HA- Jack is a freak about toilet paper too. Our guests think we are crazy because we ask each one of them, as they return from the bathroom- did you close the door? But the best was when we had a guest visiting, and apparently her purse was not far enough back on the table. Jack pulled it down, pulled out a bottle of pills and proceeded to chew through the bottle. We got really worried, and there were three of us crawling around on the floor counting out these antibiotics, trying to figure out if he swallowed any. Nope, apparently, he chewed open the bottle, dumped out the contents, and proceeded to rip the bottle to shreds. He does the same thing with cigarettes, he will pull every cigarette out and put them in a little pile, sit on them, and destroy the box. My husband left a bottle of Tylenol one night on the bedside table, same thing happened to us! We went in and there was the bottle chewed up with pills everywhere! Trixie did not eat any of them!

    Charlies_Mommy: OMG I'd have to agree that what you said about tail docking is absolutely HORRID. Thankfully they don't use that practice anymore. Now here's my tibit. I do have a boxer and they dock the tails at a very young age 3-5 days old, so that's not something the average pet owner can normally avoid. I have met MANY boxers with tails living her in Germany so I like them either way, however those tails HURT like h*ll when they smack you, almost worst than a lab tail, they have nothing to slow them down, and anyone who's met an excited boxer knows the butt is a wiggling, lol. One of the reason that dogs still have their tails docked today is because of injury from smacking into everything. And my over all opinion is yes I do like it, but I really don't like the longer show docks on boxers, dobies etc Now on to the ears. I am a 50/50 sort of person when it comes to cropped ears. I cannot stand the short "fight cut" that is on pitties, staffies, etc or even worse with italian mastiffs and dogos where they cut all the ear off. I also tend to not like the long slender show cuts on boxer, dobies and danes. It also very much is about the dog and if they have the right head for a crop. I seriously picky about cropping ears, even though I like it it has to be thr right crop for the dog. And as for dogs lie white or checked boxers I believe they should NEVER have their ears cropped it just looks ugly. Also there are some dogs that look much better with cropped versus floppy. I'll post pictures later of what I feel is an ideal cut for a dog and what I think is ugly.

    Shelby was startled once by deer while we were on a walk but she's curious about everything else, especially if Mom is there. Vince is a bit more fearful which is really funny because he looks more fearsome. He's very nervous of loud popping sounds like fireworks or cars backfiring but we joke that it's because he was in the mafia or a gang in NJ and is afraid of a drive-by.;)
