  • Hi all!
I guess I'm several years late in joining, but, better late than never!
My name is Erika. I have a 12 year old son Ryan. We have Rosey (Kazor's Savannah Wildrose), our 8.5 year old red and white basenji; Trevor, a 3-4 year old Boston terrier; Steepen, a 15 year old cat with FIV; and some marine & pond fish. We live in Hemet, which is in Southern Calif.
We've had Rosey since she was just a lil' pup, from a breeder in Yorba Linda. This summer she was diagnosed with Cushing's disease, but has been doing fine so far <knocking on="" wood="">She also has degenerative disc disease, possible beginnings of Fanconi, hip dysplasia, and multiple lipomas. Believe it or not, Rosey's always been a healthy dog up to recently.
She is trustworthy in the house when we're not home, which is more than I can say about Trevor. She is a good family dog, and loves sleeping under the blankets every night with me!
Here's a couple pics from a recent gift exchange thru a BT Forum.</knocking>

  • Welcome to the forum. It's a lot of fun and lots of great information to be found. It sounds like you have your hands full! I'm sorry to hear about Rosey's recent diagnosis, but it sounds like you are giving her wonderful care. I'll keep good thoughts for her staying well!

Please research the health problems in Basenjis especially Fanconi Syndrome! There is a DNA cheek swab test for it and I believe it only costs $75. If your dog has not been tested and is over two years old, she needs to be strip tested for glucose in the urine monthly until you have the DNA test done and obtain the results. Untreated Fanconi Syndrome will kill a dog! Here is a webpage that explains health problems in Basenjis: https://www.basenji.org/joomla/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&layout=blog&id=155&Itemid=292 Jennifer

Yep, when it comes to Basenjis, it pretty much is a small world. Humvee, aka Tex Son, (he got his call name because he was the biggest puppy in his litter) has had a great show career, and you couldn't ask for a sweeter temperament - although the whole litter was was fabulous. His mom was a total love, and his dad is still incredibly handsome and devil-may-care at almost 11 years old. Hum loves to play with puppies and hang out in the house with his human mom. So although I haven't met Reba, I'm sure he will pass on his love bug genes! We will be hoping the news is good and you soon have a noisy, lovable troublemaker in your life. Terry

@Scampy: Hello, everyone! I am so excited to have stumbled upon this forum! I belonged to Basenji Companions until last year, and I miss the community and advice. I have one basenji, a 10-year-old red & white male named Toby. I adopted him six years ago as a "golden opportunity" dog when his show/breeding days were over. He shares the house with three humans and a cat. (We may be inheriting another cat, but don't tell him…I'd sort of promised him a little sister.) Any other west Michigan folk out there? I was born in Kalamazoo! Welcome to the forum! Tabatha
