• Hello everyone,
Nice forum and it's great that there is a forum to discuss the breed we Love.

I live on the east coast, we have 6 basenji's, two of which are 5/8 African, 3 Half African and one is 1/4. We show two of the six, the others are house dogs, actually they are more like our children than pets.

I will try to post pictures soon. Glad I found this community of Basenji people.

Is your Basenji mix a rescue Sunny or did you have her from a pup? We have three males and three females. Two red & whites, two blk & wht's and two brindles…..we need a couple of Tri's! A male and a female of each coat color, quite a group.

  • Welcome aboard the forum. I can't wait to see pics of all those basenjis. I have a mix. Hollie is a basenji/whippet. Loves to run and wants to hunt constantly. I adopted Hollie from a local shelter that didn't even realize she was part B. They had her listed as a whippet mix. It didn't take long to figure out what the other part of her was…. makes me wonder how people handle the pure breds.... whew. They are a handful... but we still love them.

  • Welcome Basenji_Boy

Sandie is somewhat a rescue… My son found her in a trash pile when they was cleaning a warehouse for resale... Her mother come back for her and by time we got her back she was gone... but sighted several times...We are not even really sure she is even a mix other than she is quite large compared to the basenji's i see ...I have been looking at the Avongara's (african) Basenjis, and she looks more like them the large ears more round muzzle and tail not quite in a cinnomin roll.. But she still is large for the breed.. At 5 1/2 months she is 25 LBS. and 16 inches from wither tall... she was about 7 weeks the vet assumes when we got her.

Oh she looks all Basenji to me looking at the pictures. Our oldest male is 36 lbs. and 19.5 inches at the shoulder…....I love the Africans and the size......the ring judges have a different opinion. So far, Max is the biggest one I've seen. We have a Blk & wht female that looks like a rat next to him.

So the African is larger than the American ?? Ill be posting newer pics tonight i finally got off my lazy rear and took film to be developed… but none of them are with in the last 2 weeks... she looks Basenji just she does bark but its rarely that she does ... and shes not the crisp white and red more a fawn and white...

The Africans seem to be bigger, I'm sure there is the exception. Does she bark or is it more like a woof? Some of our basenji's sort of woof, but I wouldn't call it a bark.

I don't know if you've ever visited this site, give it a look, lot's of 'Different" looking Basenjis. Navigate to the on-line library, many interesting articles on the Basenji in Africa.
