Puppy Mill

Basenji Talk
  • I received an e-mail last night from the BRAT adoption coordinator that we got Jojo from. She said that a puppy mill in MO was closing and BRAT, who doesn't normally go to puppy mills and purchase pups but they thought this was different, went and got 2 mamas and 13 puppies!!! She also said that if you make a donation to the vet bill that you get to name a pup. Four already have names! There are pics on Yahoo abd she put the link in the e-mail but first, I don't know how to add a link and second, I read in the admin section of this forum that you are not to add a link unless approved by them. I would love to have you see this link. Any help? Terry

  • Terry,
There are pictures of the pups in the "Rescues" section of this forum. It isn't the group of pictures that Liz posted with Brat, but group pictures and puppy pile pictures. They are great.

  • Thank you Alkite. There was a sad story included in my e-mail but not sure if it is "out" there. The ones I am talking about are individual pics of the puppies in a basket or standing side view. I will check the "Rescues" section out. Thanks again. Terry

  • The individual pics are great and they are not on this site anywhere, just group shots of the same pups. Lady's and Isabelle's. They are just the cutest little things. I've picked the one I want :D Unfortunately there just isn't anymore room in the inn.

If you have an adult dog in the household, it will save you a lot of grief. The adults will usually put manners on the pup. I have yet to hear an adult "yelp", but sure have seen them snarl and pin the little so-and-so down momentarily, and when released the pup is usually a bit chastened and leaves the adult alone for awhile. Some need more convincing than others! Lady used to snarl in Tamu's face while holding her down, and watching her is what started me using the "bear hug" (minus the snarling) to correct this behaviour.

@agilebasenji: You really, really do not want to bring a puppy home that is younger than 8 weeks old. In many states it is illegal AND the puppy misses out on learning valuble puppy skills, most importantly bite inhibition. Many breeders even suggest taking a new puppy home around 10 weeks. This is SO TRUE!!! 7 wks is way to young to be bring home a puppy and taking it from his/her littermates…. I don't let puppies go till they are 10wks... And please do not just take someone's word for it that there is no Fanconi.... please check it out for yourself. This is not to say that people are not honest.. but as they always say "Buyer Beware".... it is your responsibility to verify. Also were there any other health tests done? As Kathy pointed out, most of the responsible breeders all know each other... so I would have to ask the same thing? Who has 7wk puppies? I have not heard of a litter.....

I would suggest waiting until you get the little guy. Indi didn't have a name for abut 2 days. We had all these names in mind and none of them fit. Thats my two cents anyway (oh ya and because we did that I have a cool costume for him on haloween but I don't think I am going to get any cooperation on his end)
