Basenjis and Gray Hairs

Basenji Talk

  • I took a close look at myself in the mirror today after showering and realized how many gray hairs seem to be popping out on me lately. As I thought about it more, I realized that it really shouldn't come as a surprise living with my beastly basenji, Stormie! Stormie sat and watched me inspect each strand of hair and here's his take on it (from his Dogster diary): :) ;) :D

So what's wrong with a little gray?!
    by: Stormie Basenji
Really? I mean the hooMom makes SUCH a big deal out of a few gray hairs - and she's always saying that us pets add to them on a daily basis - me especially. I think that's an insult to me, to be honest! I mean what's the problem with spilling a full to the rim cup of hot coffee all over the computer desk that holds a bunch of papers, the cell phone, the digital camera, and all the computer components? I don't see that it's a huge issue that I pounce the cats mercilessly when they scamper across the room while they're playing. I don't think it's THAT big of a deal if I steal food off the counters or shred a whole box of Puffs tissues. And really - what's so wrong with a few toppled trash cans between family? HUMPH! This hooMom of mine needs to grow some thicker skin or invest in some hair color - her whining is really starting to cramp my style!

-Stormie - not a gray hair on me! :) :D

  • :D LOL - great story. I am convinced it is Stormie's fault too! :D :D

  • Haha Duke! :D :D Maybe I should buy stock in Clairol hair coloring (hot stock tip of the day! grin! ;) ) - I don't think my boy's gonna stop being devilish anytime soon! ;) :) :D

  • I got over the gray hair thing long ago!:D :D :D I can tell you how I got every one of them too! KIDS!:D :D

  • I "thank" my six kids for my gray hairs too – esp. that oldest one; oy! -- might as well blame the dogs too.

I'm sure it has nothing to do with my AGE!!!

  • Great story!! :) My poor husband got a few grey ones this weekend…he was left alone with the kids while I was at a work conference. I came back home with a list of bad behavior :( :(

spilled cup full of fruit punch juice all over counter which resulted in pink bills, calendars, coupons, & sticky counter top UUUGH

stolen bagel from the counter making poor dad think he ate when he didn't until he caught Topaz red-handed  in her crate eating it under her blanket!!

The furballs of course claimed INNOCENCE ;)

  • Keep those stories coming Stormie!! Love 'em…I was laughing so hard I was crying!!
Kids = gray hair? Let me give you an example: Last Thursday I went alpine skiing for the first time in over 20 years. I'm on the chair lift with my 7 year old daughter (her 3rd season skiing) and we're watching the riders and skiers in the freestyle area (jumps, rails, etc.) and she said, "I want to go on those jumps Mommy"! AHHHHHH! All I heard was, POP,POP,POP - all the gray hairs popping up on my head -- and she hasn't even done them yet!!
I think Nala contributes more to raising my blood pressure!

  • I got over the gray hair thing long ago! I can tell you how I got every one of them too! KIDS!

Which ones BB - the furless ones or the four legged variety!? ;) :) :D

I'm sure it has nothing to do with my AGE!!!

LOL! I think the exact same way - it's NOT MY FAULT I'm going gray, darn it! :)

ROFL!!! Was it full moon or just a bad week-end to be a basenji owner? ;) :)

Oh Nala!! I can't imagine how gray I'd be with 2 leggers and four leggers around! I'd be a completely gray baseket case w/ out of this world blood pressure! ;) :)

I did however, exact some revenge on Stormie however innocently enough. Another Stormie diary entry on his woeful experience w/ static electricity:

    SNAP! CRACKLE! POP!
    by: Stormie Basenji

Oh this static electricity stuff is for the birds!
My woobie blanket is my foe right now!
Everytime I move under it or the hooMom covers me with it - ZAP!!!!!
    I get shocked!
    DOG GONE IT!
I get this look in my eye that says "Oh woe is me, poor, poor little Stormie - shocked by his woobie blanket!" And I give hooMom the pitiful eyes, like "How on Earth could you let this torture persist?"
She just giggles and pats my noggin and says, "It's going to be a long winter at this rate!"

    sigh

    Is it Spring yet?

-Stormie - undergoing shock treatments against my will!

  • hehe, hey grey is the new sexy, lol

@planetsaver said in Basenji for me or not ?: Will be a problem to leave him alone, let's say 10 days / month an average of 9 hours a day. Also I do not want to have to much trouble with the neighbours, but I understand he can make some noise sometimes, maybe he can be trained to stay alone and not to bark that much. Why would you even think about training a hunting hound to stay home alone ? I would never let my Basenjis alone for more than 4 hours, and even that is very rare. 3 hours is absolute maximum. Like @tanza, I have sold puppies into apartment environments as long as all other boxes ticked positive. Someone there all the time, proper attention to training, not just leaving the dog alone, especially not as a puppy. btw, he won't bark at all. As you would know if you had really researched the breed. He will cry and scream but not bark ! No. At least you are asking questions but I really think you should find another breed.

@melduff I for one think this is FANTASTIC news! You guys are so lucky! You have a one of kind super dog with the papers to prove it. Walks around the neighborhood and trips to the dog park are going to be very much fun... Friendly neighbor: Oh, she's so cute! What kind of dog is she? You: Thanks you so much. Why, she's a Staffy Chow Lab Rott Russell Husky. (Ya haff ta memorize that) :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:  Thanks a bunch for letting us know. Very much enjoyed your thread.

@weedtrek Possibly Basenji mix, nose looks a bit wider and the eyes are less oval. Could well be a Basenji mix though.

Where I am it costs about $2K+ for a dog from a breeder for just about any breed. Goldens may be less because the litters are so large. That may seem like a lot, but, as Debra mentions, dogs cost money to care for. After vet bills and boarding fees and food, it matters little what the dog cost to acquire. Leaving true puppy mills out of the discussion, given the costs of being a responsible breeder -- testing, vet bills, feeding -- and how much work breeding is, I can't imagine anyone doing it for the money. That leads to two problems for people looking for dogs. One is that since breeding isn't really lucrative, there aren't a ton of breeders, which means the supply of pups is low. Second is that most Basenji breeders want to place their pups in the best possible homes -- remember they aren't doing it for the money -- which means they're looking for people who have had Basenjis before. Something of a Catch-22.

There's nothing like a basenji in the works, from the way they instinctively lay with their had on the bum looking the other way ( I've never met a B that doesn't) to the way you KNOW they all rub on wet towels or play bow…it's all very endearing and in this breed you often identify traits that they all have, an insight into their genetics and their behaviors. I've never enjoyed a breed so much.

I read your blog and find it kind of confusing and ….. your comment about "messing with ..." hmmmmmmm.... Anyhow, yes, it is so cool when you come across another basenji, because they totally understand each other and how they want to play. We were fortunate once to have another basenji play chase with Kipawa at a dog park. I just don't think there are many basenjis in the Lower Mainland. :(
