Here is a direct link to the BCOA breeder directory. If none of the nearby breeders lists are able to help you, contact the Breeder Liaison for help. [email removed] Denise keeps a list of breeders that do not want their kennels openly advertised. https://basenji.org/index.php/about-basenjis/breeder-directory I think the nearest breed club to you is in Washington. @senjisilly said in Basenji Puppy in US: Get Educated BEFORE you BUY I second this motion! Seriously... to quote the animal shelter I got my Aussie/Border Collie from during the holidays back in the day... "A dog is not for Christmas. It's for LIFE!" Let people who've been in this breed for some time, have contacts, know the in's and out's guide you. Picture in your mind a 15-year commitment. Help this breed by supporting responsible breeders who are passionate about the breed. How do you spot a Responsible Breeder? Insist on health testing PRIOR to breeding. Know your breeder's goals for the breed. Meet them! See if they're in @Zande's Pedigree Database. Read the Basenji Club of America Illustrated Standard on @tanza's site. Most of you won't ever show your dog and that's OK! Your breeder should know the Standard inside and out. They should be able to talk to it. Read it and ask them how their line supports the standard. Ask them what their breeding goals are, what they've been working on, where they are going, etc. That's fair. A good Basenji breeder is going ask you a TON of questions, AND THEY SHOULD! We want good solid safe homes for puppies, retired show dogs or dogs that don't want to show. Not every puppy will be a show dog. In fact, most won't be. Litters on average are between 4 and 6. Responsible breeders need pet homes for puppies that aren't going to part of their breeding programs. You can support responsible breeding by providing pet homes. Just make sure your breeder will make time for ALL your questions both before and AFTER the purchase. Mine will! :beaming_face_with_smiling_eyes:

It isn't that expensive to ship... and I suggest if you can't save up .... what happens if the puppy gets hurt or sick? Can you really handle the vet bills? There are, however, breeders in Texas and Oklahoma. The problem is that many breeders have waiting list for puppies, so you may well have to wait a year if you only want a female and a young puppy. If you'll take older, many breeders may have 6 mos or older that didn't work out for their showing or breeding program... or puppies that were placed and didn't work out. Also, rescues.. are they not an option? http://www.basenji.org/joomla/index.php%3Foption%3Dcom_content%26view%3Dcategory%26layout%3Dblog%26id%3D111%26Itemid%3D94 Look to left, click on other nearby states. @culturalenigma: Hi all…sorry it's taken so long. I did not end up getting a Basenji - though I really really still want one. I did get a Jack Russell. As I said before, my mother breeds them and like any good breeder, when the people who bought her found out they were pregnant, they no longer wanted the puppy. So she was in need of a home and we were looking for a dog. Anyway, anyone know how a Basenji might get a long with a Jack? I know people with Jack's and Basenjis.. do just find.. but lots of energy there between the two….
