Heart Attack!!!

Basenji Talk
  • This morning I woke up to take Alani for her morning walk. I was a little tired and disoriented still and just threw on some clothes. When I got my coat on I walked to the door and I just let her out! I didn't put her collar on or anything I just let her out like it was a cat.

I've heard the stories of training that people talk about but have never chimed in because Alani knows the basics but not anything fancy and not by my doing.

When I walk her I've been making her stop and wait until I catch up so the pulling will stop if only for a minute. Thank god for that. I yelled stop, stay and she just waited for me to walk up to her and pick her up. Whew! I'm pretty sure my hands didn't stop shaking for a good hour after that.

I too can relate for this has happened to me. Isn't it a blessing that another dog walker or animal wasn't in eye shot of Alani? My husband took Duke out without his collar - we have an underground fence. I did not realize his collar was off until he came back inside (5 minutes later) and he came to greet me. I freaked! Whew! Either Duke knows and respects the ritual boundry lines or else nothing got his attention to bolt. I'm getting him micro chipped. Mistakes happen.

  • WOW, yeah, title this: things we do to whiten our hair early! Glad it turned out okay!

  • Sahara went out her doggie door once before I could get her collar on as well, but thank God she didn't go beyond her boundry. I also have the underground fence and she is afraid to go even close to the boundry. I had to spike it up b/c I found her in my neightbors yard once chasing a cat. The problem was she would not go back over the boundaries to get back in the yard. I had just got back from work when I saw her, I would freak if she disappeared. She will also chase the cars that pass my house, but stops short of the boundry. It is a good thing I have it or she would be dead by now. Sometimes when I come home from work it is dark and she is sleeping somewhere new in the house and I freak when I can't find her. I will start calling her and she comes to me slowly and stretching with a look like as if to say, " Yea, what do you want, I was sleeping sooooooo good". haha!!!!!:D

I am so sorry that Maya was attacked. I am fed up with people who let their dogs off the lead when they obviously shouldn't be. I avoid places where I am likely to encounter other dogs, you would not believe the goings on re-dogs at the country park it almost makes you feel ashamed to be a dog owner. You are lucky Maya coped so well. Fiji was bitten by a Rhodesian Ridgeback when she was a puppy and she is now terrified of bigger dogs.

@crystalncody: LOL, I had to try it as well, and Cody had a simlar response, only his expression was more like, "Can't you see I'm trying to take a nap? Jeeze!" Then he got up, circled, and faced the other direction with a huff! They love to sigh. We are such inconveniences to them.

It was just the initial greeting that was off right? Dogs do forget certain cues sometimes…she obviously remembered you...but it might have freaked her out if you crawled up to her kennel, particularly if that wasn't something that you normally do. Imagine this...if my husband was gone for a long time, and he didn't tell me he was going to come home while I was sleeping, and creep up to the bed...it wouldn't matter how nicely he was talking to me, I would be SCARED by his unusual behavior, and his unexpected arrival. Next time you arrive home, try just walking in like you normally do and say Hi Sheba (and puppy) like you normally do, and I bet she will be overjoyed. We have to remember that dog brains work differently than ours in a lot of ways. If we try to think of them just like people, we usually end up getting our feelings hurt :) Hey, and thanks for serving our country! Stay safe!

hi sorry for the situation!!, but the pit bull was trying to be aggressive !!. and if not , they tent to be very alpha towards other dogs. the owner needs to get help with there pit because it's going to go into aggressive mode and really hurt another animal!. get apple spray and keep it with you!. it might help but once in that mode with a pit bull it's hard to get them out of that mode too!. if you have this happen again try to grab the pitt BY THE SIDE OF THE MOUTH !!. THIS DOES TEND TO HELP THEM LET GO.

I read August Magic and was crying on page 2. But it is a great story. Anyone with a basenji (or any dog) will love it. You can also buy the cutest basenji plush toy from the website. Great gift. http://www.basenjimagic.com/plush.htm
