Random Shedding

Basenji Talk
  • I noticed Kananga has been shedding quite a bit over the past few weeks. He normally blows his coat in the later part of Winter, usually around February-March. Is it normal for them to shed at a random point in the year? Only thing that has changed recently is his food. I swapped out EVO for Orijen. Both foods are similar in nature. Salmon/Poultry mix.

I just had him in for his annual exam a few weeks ago and he's quite healthy, no concerns there. Just curious if this is common. He's just over 4 yrs old.

  • I have two that are shedding and my girl has never done it out of season and one of my males would only do it if he traveled to another area and there was a big temperature difference. He is finished shedding/molting but I think it was caused by the extremely hot weather in July and then coming inside to air conditioning. He had large splotches on his fur and he did this several years ago when he went to TX and OK in late October for lure coursing. He looks awful when he sheds/molts like this.

  • Oakley ( at 18 months) has this past year shed out of season in addition to his winter shedding….in my house you just never know when it's gonna happen...but when it happens you know it.

Tommy I have a similar brush and that is probably the best one I have found to remove hair and he enjoys the massage it gives, at least his hair is heavy enough to stay on the ground not like the Cornish rex we have, his hair is like dust it get's everywhere, don't need extra fibre in our food during shedding time, I'm sure we must ingest an amount YUCK!!, should of got a Sphinx cat and a Mexican hairless dog. Food aggression in dogs is normal. You have to train them to not be, and no stranger should try to take. Heck you shouldn't unless it is something dangerous. Do you have any idea where the guy got the dog from? Perhaps its breeder might help you with training. Do you know if perhaps the exgirlfriend wanted the dog and he took it for spite? http://k9deb.com/foodguar.htm

All of mine are having a longer and larger shed right now than is usual. I think it because it has been unusually hot and humid for a longer time than normal.

yes, vets…go and see another one! I lost one dog because the vet took too long to find out that my previous dog had be poisonned by rat poison (an italian greyhound). vets do what they can of course but...some are definitely better than others, so...when in doubt, change!

My darling lab/shepherd/airedale mix, Camin, who crossed the Bridge a few years ago used to engage in B-500 type behavior all by herself. If I egged her on with a few play bows and pretending like I was going to "get her," you could almost hear her laughing out loud.

Hi Quercus! Tano's breeder was Maripat Webber of Etukon. I believe both her siblings went on to be show dogs. Tano took after her mom as far as coloring…being the only red and white of the litter. ^_^ I'll push up Tano's appointment for her physical and request the full thyroid thing. If this is all related to thyroid I definitely want to get it looked into asap! Thank you for pointing out that it could all be related! She really develops a thick woolly undercoat in the fall/winter. You'd think the house wasn't near 70 degrees all winter! If her hair was a little longer I could possibly clean it up and felt with it--she sheds that much! :D
