WI-Eau Claire-1 Yr. Old Brindle Male-On Craigslist

  • When I chatted with the owner I more got the impression that he was nipping and playing rough and that they had no experience handling a basenji.

Are you trying to stir up trouble?

  • @Moth:

Stating the facts, which were posts by the owner is not stirring up trouble. Anyone who has read through the posts knows what the original poster has typed, so whats your problem with it.

The impression you have is not what the owner said in the thread. In her first post the owner says the dog has started biting. Further on the owner says the dog is biting harder. Which one of those posts did you miss.

To post this dog on Craig's list and represent this dog as good with children when there is a known and admitted problem with nipping and biting is irresponsible and in the end can possibly get a child or someone else hurt.

This quote is out of post 13:

"He started out nipping my little brothers and now whenever I show dominance he bites me."

    This one from post 21:

"If I Ignore him when he gets nippy he does it harder and more and I cannot have this since there is children in the house. "

And this last quote from post 38:

"Agh, Diesel has now taken on biting(hard) at all times. I can be sitting down doing nothing and he just runs up and clamps down."

From what the owner has written in this forum, the biting and force behind it has progressed.

Thing's kind of speak for themselves here.

This owner has also mentioned that prior to owning this Basenji she has owned to Pitbull Mixes. What happened to those dogs?

  • I agree with Twindogsdifferentmothers… it is totally irresponsible and dangerous to present this dog to someone as good with kids (or even adults for that matter) when it is known there is a problem with nipping. Or hard nipping.... this could easily esclate... and someone could get hurt.

I talked to her for a while in that thread…

I agree that posting the dog on craigs list is not the best place place to advertise a dog that needs the right kind of home...

I do think rehoming him is the best thing for him, as long as she does it responsibly! I feel with some of the things she mentioned that they simply don't seem to have a handle on owning a basenji. A poster here who is aware of the other thread and the dog proclivities has expressed an interest.

I would just hate to see a barely one year old dog end up without a chance... Neither you nor I actually have seen the dogs behavior we only have the owners interpretation. He is basically still and adolescent which makes for sometimes pushy and unacceptable, but correctable behavior. If you look at the thread several people have counseled seeing a trainer/behaviorist (including myself). If the owner does not feel up to taking that step it may be best for Diesel to be placed with someone that does. If you look back you will also see that I suggested she contact BRAT instead.

So yes I have read the thread.

It just seems to me that you only post when you have something adverse to say...but we are all entitled to our opinions.

  • We agree with you, we are all entitled to our opinions. Of course we all want what is best for this dog regardless of age. We find it unfortunate that any dog should have to be in adverse situation but it happens.

All anyone has to go by in a forum is what the owner posts in the thread. Whether you or anyone else has seen the dog personally does not change how the owner feels or the perception toward the animal they have. The owner is the one that has to deal with that.

Aren't you the least bit curious as to what happened to the two pit bull mixes this person said she owned prior to this Basenji?

Good for you for suggesting she contact Brat. We are active in Brat as well. If the owner had followed the original advice and contacted Brat then maybe the posting on Craigs list would not have taken place. Either way, the owner should have been truthful and revealed to any prospective owner that this dog was nipping and bitting.

  • My main hope is for Diesel to end up safe. He is the one that currently needs to find a good situation.

I can not say anything about the prior dogs. Nor can we do anything for them… I have long ago accepted the fact that not all people are responsible pet owners and that in many cases there is little that I can do about it in many cases. I try to help when I can. Yes, it does make me very upset the way dogs have to struggle with the whims of sometimes uncaring and unfit owners...but other than helping when and where we can what can we really do other than making sure that our own dogs have the safest, best possible homes?

I do not think that any purpose would be served by bringing up their past dogs and and starting a discussion with them about this. I just want to focus on them doing the best thing for the basenji that they have now 🙂

  • Yes Moth, so do we. All we have been saying it that putting this dog up on craig's list is not the best solution. In addition posting that this Basenji was good with kids when it has a known nipping and biting problem is totally misleading and irresponsible. If Diesel is adopted or re-homed on Craigs list and bites someone, unless there is a shot record that this owner has, that dog may end up in a worse situation than it is now. As you might have read in the original post, the current owner says the former owner did not supply her with his papers. So who knows what shot's this dog has had. Do you understand our concern now?

Going to Dave or to Brat is a much better solution.

  • Diesel is good with kids now. I figured out what was making him misbehave.

  • So judgemental this group is. I'm simply trying to find him a better home then what I can provide him with.
Who the hell are you to imply anything about my past pets? Ever stop to think that th ey yactually got hit by a car or died of old age? Of course not. Like I said I am not giving this B to anyone that merely wants the dog. He is good with kids. He would rather be attached to my brothers side than at mine. He's like a guard dog almost.

Enigmatic, you cannot expect people to know you've solved the biting problem with the dog if you never bothered to post a follow up about it. All anyone on this board knows is that you were having problems with biting and nipping and now you are trying to get rid of him. Not only that, but instead of posting on here, or contacting BRAT, you've posted him on craigslist. Not exactly conducive to him getting into a Basenji savvy good home. What are we supposed to think? It looks pretty bad when you add it all up. Also the timing is so short, it would not occur to anyone that you had completely "solved" an issue that was giving you such grief so quickly. It just seems unlikely that a biting dog would suddenly stop, don't you think? Don't blame people for reaching logical conclusions with the extremely limited information you've given here and the mightily strange way you've gone about seeking to re-home your dog.

  • im quite aware of how this all seems to add up. I simply do not like feeling attacked at a place where I came for help with my dog. I'm done. Discuss me all you want. I'm off of here.
