Clicker fun

  • I wanted to share a fun thing that we did yesterday. My daughter, Sophie complained that "her" puppy was ignoring her. Willow is 13.5 weeks old and very snuggly, but does have things she wants to do that are not necessarily part of a 6-year-old's plan.

We've been clicker training Willow and her brother since we got them 10 days ago with huge success - they know sit, down, shake hands and (sometimes) go to their beds. I'm having a ball.

Anyway, as an experiment (and to stop the whining), I got Willow to "go find Sophie" using the clicker. I took a treat and held it over Sophie's lap and when the puppy followed into her lap, I clicked. After about 5 times, she did it on her own when I prompted her. There were giggles and glee and treats all around.

I had to share this success to make me feel better after getting up for the past several nights at 1:30 and 4:30 with my boy puppy to take him out. It's getting a little depressing.

That is awesome they know so much already! I JUST started clicker training my girl TODAY she is 12 weeks. She was having issues with food because she had no appetite but she eating good now and is interested so I decided to give it a whirl. She learned to sit, lay down, and roll over pretty well for her first day. I did not expect her to do so well. But I am so going to try to have Dolce try and "find John" my bf hahha such a good idea. He is jealous she likes me a little more than him right now because I have been able to spend the most time with her. I guess ur daughter and him have similar feelings.

This was really funny. I could just see B's trying to decorate a tree. Hmmm….there would be a fight over the garland, all of the ornaments would be a chew toy/ball to chase around the house. There would be no lower limbs on the bottom of the tree and the presents (like mine) are missing corners of wrapping paper......

Isn't it interesting that some of us use the same language for the same purposes no matter where we come from?!!

you know, when I started taking agility classes, it was just for fun, just to see what would happen, wasn't anticipating on actually competing with my dog. I'd say find a class and see where things go. It's really the best way to safely introduce your dog to obstacles. Of course now, 12 years later I'm sort of a basenji-agility junkie. So, it can be addicting. My hubby also enjoys building agility equipment, even bought and learned to use a welder.

@bernicem77: I took Luke to his first puppy class tonight, and WOW. He would not listen to me at all. He was more concerned with what the other dogs were doing than what we were supposed to be doing. What kind of treats did you guys use when trainning your B's? Like I said in my previous post, this is similar to what happened with me. Zoni had to get comfortable in the room, sometimes took her about 10 minutes or so. After a while she got used to it but was still very interested in everyone else, particularly if we were moving around the room. Really practice on attention exercises at home and that will help. I went through a range of different treats, and I think I found for class the smellier was better for getting her attention. Although not smelly, beef lung worked really well for me too and it is easy to use and break up into little pieces. Little biscuit-type treats weren't high value enough for her in class.

Bring a chair to sit in (as there will be a long waiting period in between runs), a crate for your B to hang out when you aren't running or walking around, snacks, plenty of water for you and your B and you should be all set! I will be in a black Toyota FJ Cruiser so if you see my truck you can park by me.
