House training

Basenji Training
  • HI! I am new to this forum and stumbled upon it by accident looking for help with my 8 month old Basenji named Rosco. We adopted him from the local rescue league when he was 6 months old. We had no idea what we were getting into haha! The problem that i am having is one the boundless energy woohoo he can just go and go!! The biggest problem is at first we thought he might be house broken with just a few accidents but the first snow came and he was not happy about it and since then (about a month ago) he has started to pee and poo in the house. Not all the time and never in his crate. How do we teach him not to go in the house and go outside only? We are new to this our last rescue was already house trained. We do also have the problem he likes to chew and take things and run around the house. We realize this is puppy behavior, he sure does keep us busy. We always say how can something so cute be so bad!

Just a suggestion: When you see him "misbehaving" by chewing on 'less than ideal' items, offer him one of his toys and use the word "trade". In other words, 'chew on this instead', and when he accepts the toy - praise him. And when you see him get the toy on his own, praise him again. It could help him understand that certain toys are just for those times when you want to "rip someone's head off*". (*not meant literally, only in doggy world play)

What an interesting article - I must say I do use 'No' but in future will think first before I say it!

Arlo does "downs" like Zoni (Aries' niece :)) does….with extreme enthusiasm by slamming her paws to the ground. Love it.

Just curious - have you tested the drug yet? How is it working? I take it you can read norwegian as you live her. If you want to, I can email you som info I got after a session with Gry L?berg regarding my Giants seperation anxiety, it has a training program in it, and some general info.

@Shaye's: Not to be indelicate, but you can also watch the dog carefully for when he's starting to circle and, their little butts kind of pooch out when they are ready to poop. Watching for that was a godsend for us when we were training Shaye. Yup. Very good point here. I noticed this as well.

HA! We did the up& back method at my petsmart class. Jack is so flexible, he would actually follow the treat back with his head, until his head was almost lying on his back. I think what I finally had to do was push his butt down with one hand, while holding the treat in front of his face with the other. He got really good at it…now, he sits when I snap my fingers, when I say sit, or, my favorite, when I salute him. Good luck!
