    HI! I am new to this forum and stumbled upon it by accident looking for help with my 8 month old Basenji named Rosco. We adopted him from the local rescue league when he was 6 months old. We had no idea what we were getting into haha! The problem that i am having is one the boundless energy woohoo he can just go and go!! The biggest problem is at first we thought he might be house broken with just a few accidents but the first snow came and he was not happy about it and since then (about a month ago) he has started to pee and poo in the house. Not all the time and never in his crate. How do we teach him not to go in the house and go outside only? We are new to this our last rescue was already house trained. We do also have the problem he likes to chew and take things and run around the house. We realize this is puppy behavior, he sure does keep us busy. We always say how can something so cute be so bad!

    Hi! I'm looking for a dog trainer, but no success.. I've looked through so many reviews (http://www.pissedconsumer.com/consumer-reviews/animal-services.html)!! But nothing helps.. I can't find a perfect trainer who'd combine excellent professional and personal skills..Can you help me? Please advise!

    This a very interesting article, Andrea. I'm not a professionla trainer and only have little experience in the field of professional dog trainers here. Those I do know mainly use positive reinforcement but I also know some old school trainers who while professing to now use positive reinforcement do rather confuse the two. I love and totally agree with his statement that 'training is not something we do to our dogs: its something we do with them'. This I think sums up completely the way we need to train our Basenjis for the best results. Toughand Prissy, thank you for posting that excellent video link.

    @Shaye's: Not to be indelicate, but you can also watch the dog carefully for when he's starting to circle and, their little butts kind of pooch out when they are ready to poop. Watching for that was a godsend for us when we were training Shaye. Yup. Very good point here. I noticed this as well.

    Gbroxon - no big deal. No one knew Luny (aka Tommy) would exhibit SA and especially not in such a severe form. And I understood what you were thinking - about people dumping dogs. One of my stupid neighbors has gone that route (they've had 6 different dogs in 3 years - I won't talk to them anymore). And I don't know how many times I've come across people who say "oh what a pretty dog, I'd like one like that" when they see me walking my dog. I almost always discourage them from getting a basenji (with that attitude no dog would be good for them). So I'm with you there.

    We put the dogs on our schedual instead of waiting till they have to go- We take them out first thing in the morning after they eat & before they go to bed also anytime we come home after being gone or after heavy play/training. We also walked then to get it in their heads of marking outside. They now will hold it till their walks so they can mark as much as they can.
