Brand new Basenji owner

    Hi I Rachel, am a brand new basenji owner….and by that I mean this is my first day with my first Basenji. lol I am 18 and live in New Mexico. I own three dogs, Ananda the Coyote/shepherd mix, Keoke the Doberman/Pitt mix, and Kiora my new Basenji. Kiora is a young adult tri-color female, I adopted her so I am not sure of her exact age,but she is estimated to be between 9 months to a year. She is unregistered but I will be getting her ILP as soon as she is fixed. My other two dogs are really hating me right now,lol. They are all really curious about each other but they are not quiete sure what to make of each other yet. Being a sighthound lover I have been familiar with the basenji breed for quiet some time, and after meeting her and seeing what a wonderful personality she has it was an easy descision to adopt her. She does have some SA but since there is almost always someone at home in my house I am not really worried about it. We have just got back from a nice walk and a romp in the park and she is crashed out under my bed...a tired dog is a good dog!;) I look forward to getting to know everybody and there 'senjis as I get to know mine as well.

    Cute, but head is not a Basenji type… that said... when you have mixes, they can take on the "DNA" from either/or.... sire/dam... there was a litter years ago of a Beagle mix and a purebred Basenji... I think it was a litter of 6 or more.... 2 looked totally like a Basenji, two like a Beagle... one in fact looked totally like a German Shepard.... so with mixes, you never know unless someone really knows who the Mom/Dad are

    Looks like you will have your hands full! The video made me chuckle, especially how quickly it happened and how the pup looked excited to make it to the sofa!

    Adorable face - probably a devil in hiding :p If the biting is clearly play biting a firm NO should work (and see previous comments). If more serious then try bitter apple spray. You definitely want to stop this type before it gets out of hand. Mine (3 yrs old) occasionally will bite (gently and really just a mouthing) when trying to get my attention to play. But you can tell from her expression that she knows she did something unacceptable. Consistent training is the most important thing you could do.

    I didn't know much about B's when I met Champ but to say that what characteristics B's share is "special needs" is plain idiotic. I consider it a blessing to have familiarized (and still learing) with this wonderful breed. It has made me realize that all dogs are not the same and it's important to learn as much about what makes them individuals as possible. I'm glad Raleigh found you and is now able to express himself freely without being labeled "special needs."
