Oklahoma City Puppy Mill

Off Topic
  • I stopped for fuel in Oklahoma City a couple of months ago and heard over my CB radio something that just frosted my backside.

"Little AKC trucker buddies…we have Yorkies, Bostons and Shih Tzus for $XXX each, kick it on back to..."

Well, I called the guy out on it.I told him on no uncertain terms he was at best a BYB, at worst a for-profit puppy mill and probably had poor quality animals or he wouldn't have to be selling them over the CB to people he hasn't screened. I went into a litany of questions he either couldn't answer or answered wrong to. Like: Did he show his animals? Does he have a spay/neuter contract? What happens if it doesn't work out? Where are the dams and sires? Made him look like the jerk he was.

And he was selling them out of the CB shop across from the Pilot on Morgan road! Apparently, he didn't think there was a driver who knew a thing or two about the AKC and symptoms of puppy milling. Well, I doubt he made any sales that day, but unfortunately, one day isn't enough. I'll lay dollars to donuts he was right back at it the next day.

Well, they sure do get irritated when they catch the proper label! I think I was still being called names as his voice faded into the distance...:D

  • Good for you! Thank you for speaking up.

  • I can imagine the scene over the airways now… that's awesome that you called him on it!
Hope everyone else listening that day remembered something of the exchange, too.

p.s. Just out of curiosity how many truckers out there have little canine trucker buddies? Percentage-wise, want to guess? =)

  • Way to go, AJ's Momma! I hope to meet you some day in Decatur or Ocala… and I will check all of your 18 tires for proper air pressure/tread wear/hiccups!

While I don't know the exact number of canine trucker buddies, my guess is that it's not as high as you'd imagine... perhaps 35%?

And while I'm proud of you for calling out against the puppy mill, I'm also proud of the many drivers that heard your message and LISTENED... I've worked around the trucking industry for the last 12 years, and most drivers are kind hearted folks. Driving a truck isn't a job, it's truly a PROFESSION. :)

A big baroo for you and AJ!

  • Definitely not as many dog-on trucks as you would think. I'd venture to guess about 10% on the high side. Unfortunately, most truck dogs are very fat.

@curlytails: A large commercial breeder in Quebec was raided over the weekend, and over 500 dogs were confiscated. The breeder is Paws R Us, which previously proudly called itself the largest commercial breeder in Canada. There will always be a problem out there when the mentality is "bigger/volume is better". Just this weekend we met a young guy who proudly said that his dog was one of 12 in the litter, and that there were lots of other dogs 'there' (at the BYB) and because of that he got his 'purebred' black lab for only $75. I cringed and could almost visualize the horrible situation the dogs were in. We need to keep getting across to people that BYBs who do not care about anything other than $$ need to be put out of business.

These little fatties are doing sooooooo well. Im used to ACD babies losing weight in the first couple of days, then gaining, doubling their weight around day 10ish… Not with these guys, no weight loss, all have doubled their weight by day 6 ... Mumma Crystal doesnt even look like she has a lot of milk at all, clearly what she does have is pretty damn good though !!! Its interesting that for this litter I didnt feed Crystal puppy food at all during her pregnancy, as I have done for all my previous litters, and the pups were good weights at birth, and are now gaining so well ;)... Certainly food for thought, (pardon the pun :D)...

Yes Rita Jean and Lenora, she's Cavalier King Charles. She was realy good for us, she had a bit of a play but slept most of the night. Tom our cat was realy kind to her but unfortunately Jerry wasn't and gave her a swipe. I felt awful as i didn't see it coming and she's such a sweet little thing. Can't believe the difference in getting a Basenji pup and this one. They just decided to get a Dog, searched for a pup and went to get her. I have to say that i think our way is best for the Dog.

@Ninabeana26: I swear websites like this just increase the chances of puppy mills & BYBs. That is so true. This is why it is so important that it is not only responsible breeders that have websites directing people on how to find a responsibly bred puppy but also that responsible owners have websites. Every person can help battle puppy mills by helping other people find a responsible breeder. The more websites are out there directing people to websites like http://www.basenji.org/learn http://kineticbasenjis.tripod.com/Information/Buying_a_Basenji.html http://basenji.org/?q=node/30 http://www.basenjiclubofcanada.com/BCOC-BreedersDirectory.html Any links to the National Club's Breeder Directory and educational websites help to increase the chances that buyers will not go to a BYB or puppymill.
