Breeder in southern British Columbia or northern Washington

Breeder Talk
  • Hello there,

This is my first post on this forum but I have been avidly reading everything Basenji related I could get my hands on. My boyfriend and I are just starting to seriously consider adding a dog to our family and I fell in love with Basenji's when I first saw one online.

We would very much like to visit a breeder or owner in our area to determine how my boyfriend reacts (allergies) and to actually get to see some Basenji's and interact with them before we make any major decisions. If anyone has some contact information for someone in our area that wouldn't mind letting us visit, please feel free to contact me. My email is kljones5@hotmail.com

    Thanks very much!

ETA: My boyfriend is quite allergic to cats, so would prefer a home with no felines so we can get a clear idea of how he reacts to just Basenjis. Thanks!

  • There's several breeders here in the northwest, here in Washington the following spring to mind:

    Jumoke Basenjis http://www.jumoke.com/jumoke.htm
    Taji Basenjis http://www.ktcampbell.com/taji/index.html
    FoPaw's Basenjis http://www.fopawsbasenjipuppies.com/
    Avant Basenjis http://uwinferno.tripod.com/basenji/index.html

    There's more at: http://www.evergreenbasenjiclub.org/breeders.html

The only ones I know of in BC are:
    Bajoran Basenjis
    Terrarust Basenjis (http://www.terrarust.com/)
    Orru Basenjis

The Canadian national Basenji club would be able to refer you to a breeder in your area.

Basenji puppies can be somewhat of a… handful - even my two who are well past the puppy stage can get mischievous. There's plenty of older dogs needing good homes both from breeders and rescue, so there's always that option too.

You might find that a lot of breeders and exhibitors are at Nationals so you might not get any replies until next week as they run until September 5th.

  • You can also try Deb Verzyl of Orru Basenji's. She's in BC as well. Deb is not breeding currently as her hubby is sick and she has a full plate with racing, school (she's a teacher) and her other activities. But she may be able to direct you in the direction you may want to go. She is the curret VP of the Basenji Club of Canada. Her published e-mail is orru@seaside.net

@debbie said in reputable breeder?: @tanza yes my mistake it was tested with OKC I got papers to prove it.. she was born with the disease Are you referring to OFA? If so then I would wonder if the pup's sire/dam were not the real sire/dam of the pup you got? Only if they are Afflicted with the Fanconi gene (the pup) would they develop Fanconi? Did the paperwork from OFA say "clear"?

Sharron, this entire discussion was first based around the admission of stock into the stud books. Each and every time the threads were hi-jacked so that no real discussion could be had by the group. This particular topic has been covered over and over. Just search the threads

I'm sorry for your loss. I did not mean to seem overly harsh, but I am glad you found the article eye-opening. I am very sad that you lost your boy so young. Please consider giving a homeless dog a second chance, or buy only from responsible breeders for a pup. it really is worth it. -Nicole

@Lauma: Do you have any information on Itzyu Basenjis in VA? My mother and brother are adopting a "Golden Opportunity" dog from them next month. Can't go wrong with a Basenji from Itzyu Basenjis…. my opinion is go for it..... and they will get a great "golden opportunity" dog from them!

@khanis: Not polished ??? Sorry, but that is one of the silliest things that I have heard in ages. **I'm sorry; to what is this referring? I have seen dogs that are uglier than sin.. in the show ring no less! People that can't breed a decent looking domestic basenji aren't going to be able to breed a decent looking African basenji! **Uglier than sin? Really? I really prefer health and temperament and function as breeding goals. IMHO. How is that for a bunch of African beauties??? **Your dogs are quite lovely. So are my two Jasiri-Sukari B's. But neither would win in a show. We think they're beautiful, too. And they both have sweet temperaments. Lucky us. :) s.
