Adding another pet

Off Topic
  • In about a month my son and his wife will be moving in until they move to Virgina this summer. When they come they will be bringing an adult cat with them. Now my poor old cat who is around 17 yrs and has had the house and humans to himself for something like 13 yrs has to put up with a third animal invading his space. A year ago it was my B zoey. In October it was my sons dog Lizzy. Really he has been great about it. At meal times all three will be there at my feet waiting for me to dish it out. Cat gets fed first and he makes sure they know it lol
Any suggestions on how to make this transition easier. This cat has been at her moms and is used to other cats but not dogs. I was thinking they should bring the cat for a few visits before they move in to see how things go so we can plan.

  • Visits are a great idea. In the past year I have been staying at my familys farm wich has plenty of room but I added another dog and my Mother got another dog for a total of 4. Not bad since two are tiny ones, lol. But it took a bit to learn to b a good pack. I am not sure how cats mix with the dogs but I'm sure visits won't hurt any. Good Luck :)

I had not heard about the problem with Pet Airways. I hope the issue with it is actually a contract problem and not a financial one! The woman in the story who did not get her money back from Pet Airways should be getting her money back from her credit card company and then the credit card company deals with the company. Jennifer

Fortunately bloat is more prevalent in the larger dogs, but can happen to any size. Friends with Great Danes were advised by their vet to use elevated feeders, saying that there is less gulping of air if the food is at the correct height. While I am not too worried about bloat, I got elevated feeders and my dogs like them. A small thing to do that helps with digestion. Anne in Tampa

When my middle son and wife come to visit - they bring their 2 labs. I let the labs be loose in the house and kennel my basenjis - can't imagine the basenji 500 with 2 huge labs in a small house. As folks get older though the dogs can be an issue so don't know how much longer I'll be able to let them come. This Thanksgiving - 2 labs and 2 mature ladies with walkers was interesting. However when we would go and visit my husbands family - could never bring dogs - they refused to have dogs in the house - ever. I agree with whoever said - their house their rules.
