@tanza I thoroughly agree with you (again !) - putting a puppy into a crate for a nap - poor little animal probably thinks he is in a prison - and that having to take a nap when he may not want one is some kind of punishment.
A nice comfy bed beside a radiator, with a favorite toy and a bone and he will nap when he needs to once he learns that is HIS place and he won't be disturbed when he is sleeping there.
Puppies nap for shorter and longer periods, as they need to - you can't regiment them !

Management is the greatest tool for preventing this kind of behavior.

Also, as others have mentioned, exercise and wearing them out energetically is very useful as well.

If they have access to an appropriate toy to chew on, are managed correctly, and get enough daily exercise, you shouldn't have too many problems.

If your feet give reassurance and comfort, that is the place for the Basenji to sleep !

I am a day out out hospital after some rather complicated surgery but although my boys slept with Paul while I was away, last night they were both back in their usual places - at my feet and behind my knees - taking up more than 2/3 of the bed. . .

Chase is great... if he's chasing you. But if you're chasing him, this is very bad.

Playing chase, with him chasing you, will also help with engagement. Play chase with food.

Also, I would recommend hand-feeding for (at least) a month. You want to build value in you.

In addition, it has to be said, that some puppies are just lazy and like being bummy. You can encourage active behavior by making yourself valuable (so he wants to be around you) and by making activities valuable. At 6 months however, you might be out of luck. Still, it's your dog, so it's probably worth it to give it a dedicated try.

You also, might want to try using more valuable food rewards (like steak, cheese, etc. (whatever he loves and doesn't typically get much of)).

I know my basenji understands and he does listen to me but he has selective hearing. We are traning on it and he is getting better each day.
