I crate my basenji at night. He was extremely resistant at 2-3 months but is crated next to his morkie brother who is the same age so is not lonely. I have spent countless hours casting chicken into the crate and closing the crate behind him then opening. We also did a frozen peanut butter Kong with K9 grade CBD oil. Around five months it clicked, and the screaming and anxiety stopped. And he now goes in with a hand signal and the cue word “in”. When he is fully potty trained I plan to stop crating but for now I have found that consistency works. Many people on this forum suggest that the only moral way to have a basenji sleep is in your bed. I have ignored this as my bedroom is also a nursery and it was fine. Consistency, dumping treats, plenty of exercise and toys are the path to crate training success.

RE: Painful Medical Care
@eeeefarm
What I mean was I am using 100% redirection or going into a training session after a firm NO, not popping or any other corrections. This is nothing like that because its pain in response to...nothing. I am not overly sentimental, I just dont want my dog to slink away and avoid me or attack pillows after I try and help him. -
Painful Medical Care
After an infected bug bite turned into a huge patch of infected dermatitis, we have to debride, clean with alcohol, and apply anti-biotics to our 7 month olds scrotum and thighs (which makes him alternatively scream and snap). All basenji literature is nearly obsessive about avoiding negative reinforcement (which i avoid at all cost), and he is clearly pissed at us afterwards. What can I do to avoid basenji hate for torturing him for 4-10 days straight? I am currently dumping chicken and favored chews on him but he isnt letting me pet him.

RE: Basenji Dandruff
Use a hound glove and/or a warm moist paper towel. Get those natural oils flowing and picks up the dandruff.

Ben
I have been using the forum so I guess I should introduce myself. This is Ben. His temperament and socialization to dogs and humans are really amazing and unless he is totally bored he would prefer peace and quiet, and is coming up on 6 months. I am not a dog person per se (my wife is), but I love wandering the woods with him. Right now we are walking about 2-3 miles a day, and he and his brother spend the rest wrestling and playing with my kids (8-11) and sleeping in soft blankets.

Your dogs eat better than I do!

RE: Not Interested In Eating His Food!
I'm having the same problem, I mix in chopped meat, cheese and bone broth but he totally ignores kibble. I know everyone says 'go raw' or some sort of rice dish, but as he is a puppy I want him to eat some nutritionally balanced kibble along with his food. He also prefers to eat after a hike, not right when he gets up (but will throw up if he doesnt eat early).

RE: Fear period aggression
I found a really excellent method which fixed this quickly. I just give house guests (esp males) a few pieces of chicken and have them freely give it to the pups when they meet them. They LOVE house guests now.

RE: Lure Coursing Age
Can anyone recommend some basic equipment for this. Hiking in the heat isn’t as effective as early spring hiking and the dog park depends upon playful friends.

RE: Basenji Growth Plates
I hike the belknaps/ossipees with my pup. Would never take him up a 4ker until like after 10 months. After all which are less than 5 miles?

RE: Basenji Growth Plates
I’ve been keeping my 5 month old to hikes 3 miles and under (our every other day hike is a 2 mile out and back with 1000 feet of elevation behind my house) at a 2.0 mph pace and off granite when possible, and he blows me away for stamina. I try to stay on bouncy pine needles. I can’t imagine it’s more dangerous than 2 miles on sidewalks.
He seems to love it, doesn’t show exhaustion or laying down, takes numerous sniff breaks, doesn’t limp, and his foot pads are fine. I much prefer it to dog parks and neighborhood walks. Maybe I’m messing up but I don’t I’m pushing him at all.

@mikesull hey did you get your dog from Boston Basenji?

RE: Exercise Limits for Puppies
We went for a mile at noon in the woods and he was moving at a solid trot, and still seemed down to play (morkie slept through the afternoon). So I took him for a short walk in our cul de sac this evening and he is so exhausted he barely greeted my wife when she got home (and is currently in his clamshell). Still seems very variable, I just don’t want to get a mile in and have to carry him out (or injure him!)

Exercise Limits for Puppies
Hello. My family just adopted a new Basenji, and he really is a wonderful affectionate dog with an excellent sweet temperament. At about 5 months I am a little confused about how much I should be exercising him. Compared to his morkie brother (same age) he has seemingly endless stamina, and seems happy and content with exercise. I am an avid hiker, and I can give him about as much as he asks for. A mile in the woods seems to leave him wanting more, but an hour in our village with slight uphills obviously tires him out. I started bringing him up a local mountain and that slowed him down very quick. Was wondering if anyone had a rule of thumb, and an age where I can start trending towards 5-10 miles uphill. This forum has been invaluable, thanks for the help.
