I can leave mine loose in the car as long as there is more than one -the only time I've had damage (which included seat belts!) is when one's been left on their own. I would never leave the car running though and I always leave it in gear (I don't have internal locking either).

They vary in size. I had dreams of a nice 18 pound bitch. My bitch won her championship, svelt, at a good 25 pounds. Her niece, our 2nd basenji, was this hard muscled machine and she topped 27 pounds at her best. (Sadly steroids from 4 yrs til death made her usually closer to 32 pounds.) I was at a show about 18 yrs ago and saw some part African basenjis that looked even bigger. But the European and US standards for size are almost identical (1 pound heavier for females in US).

As for the show ring sizes difference, someone who shows internationally can answer. I just know from rescue that most that I see tend to be bigger, not smaller, than standard.

The FCI (European) Standard:
SIZE AND WEIGHT :
Ideal height : dogs 43 cm (17 ins) at withers,
bitches 40 cm (16 ins) at withers.

Ideal weight : dogs 11 kg (24 lbs),
bitches 9 1/2 kg (21 lbs).

AKC Basenji:
Height: 17 inches (male
16 inches (female)

Weight: 24 pounds (male)
22 pounds (female)

My Basenjis are 6 and 3. We live in Florida and I usually run with them 1-2, sometimes 3 miles. My run is still just a trot for them, but I let them stop and sniff and potty whenever they need/want, and I just do squats while they do it :). On the 3-milers, I am sure to bring water or let them stop and drink at the beach which is the turn around point. I also wet them down before hand.

we tried a steroid doseage for 2 plus years and did not offer enough relief to continue on that therapy.

I always wanted a dog, but my stepfather was allergic. My husband grew up with basenjis in the 50's in New Bedford MA. They never showed, just had them as pets. They did everything wrong– let them run loose, bred them without planning, but he had great stories about them, particularly one girl named Congo.
His family had a rescue B named Rusty, who was a great character (also loose, but luckily a homebody) when I met him in the 70's. I liked Rusty's aloof confidence, and got my first B in 85-- Kenji. He was backyard bred-charming but turned very dominant and difficult at adolescence, but we worked with and had him until he was 13.
We got our second dog from Matahari B's, and Caddie was a tricolor sweetheart for 15 years.
Now I've got the gentlest, most outgoing B I've ever met. Sol was raised by someone else, and they did a great job-- thanks Eldorado!
I adopted him at 5, and after a few weeks of thinking about it, he decided to stay (he jumped the fence twice, but came when I called the second time). He's my best friend, and even goes to work with me in the winter. And sometimes I wonder if he's really a basenji, because he wags his tail so much-- but only for me.

I have a friend who swears by her Walkydog, takes her basenji for 6-8 mile rides when it is cooler. It evidently unclips easily if your dog needs a pit-stop. I'm afraid any one of my 3 would drag me to my death if attached to me on a bike.

Hmmm… JazzysMom-- it is our planet, yes but that's about the extent to which I agree with you. I don't think pollution is as much of a problem for wildlife as habitat destruction is...

An example- my parents own 25 acres in the mountains. I went to visit them this past weekend and I know their neighbor has beavers on his property. I was so excited to have a chance to see them up close; on my last visit I only got to see the pencil shaped tree trunks and their house- but this time I really wanted to wait for a siting. Unfortunately I found out that they had created a dam that flooded the property so the land owner had them trapped and then killed. For what?? Doing what beavers do?! The land owner has acres upon acres of just woods and lakes and streams. Did he really NEED to remove the beavers because they were doing THEIR thing? I don't know. I just think that was unnecessary. That is the kind of thing that irritates me. Why is it OUR land and not theirs? They had probably been in those woods for ages... but no, it's OUR land now. But they were wrecking OUR land and OUR gardens and OUR things...

And sure, the environment changes and makes food sources scarce from year to year but what about all the roads they have to cross to find the shrinking food supplies? They're bound to get squished with any step they take. And heaven forbid they come within 30 feet of a house... PEST we scream! Quick, call someone to take it out!! We're the greedy ones. Want, want, want... it's all ours! None for you! If we wanted to 'share' the land/environment/planet we'd be more like the Native Americans...IMO of course.

(Not trying to attack anyone, but I have a BIG heart for creatures who cannot help themselves)
