How much to feed a puppy?

Member Introductions
  • My puppy is 9 weeks old. I'm feeding him 3 times a day with 2 ounces of puppy food each feeding. Does he need more? I'm feeding my 13 month basenji once a day 8 ounces of food. Is that enough? She is about 18 lbs.
    Thanks.
    Tom

    p.s.
They would eat more if I gave it to them.

  • For your 13 month old, how is her weight? Can you just faintly see her ribs? Does she have a nice waist? There is really no "set" amount, each dog is different in built. How tall is your 13 month?

For your puppy, what did your breeder tell you? That is your best source? Personally I like to keep a puppy a bit on the "plump" side till 4 months or so… I have had experiences with a puppy getting sick and had he not carried a bit more weight, we would have lost him. But again, your breeder should be your best resource....

And what kind of food are you feeding? The better quality food the better for the dog...

Make sure you tell breeders that he'll be home. :) List, no list, breeders want the best homes and that certainly would bump you up on my list!

how long have you had him? Biting can take months to curb! Its really a matter of consistency and patience, i know it is hard!! I would highly recommend finding a good behaviourist in your area to teach you the neccessary tools to get him to be a confident great dog

Sharron is sooo right. I dont know if we will ever have a puppy again. Older rescue dogs just seem more our style now. Everybody loves a puppy but our older girl is just a joy and has not caused as many stresses yet. Youngandtired, I am sorry to hear that you may have an affected Basenji. I know how devastating it can be when they start spilling sugar. Our Marley was 5 when she was finally diagnosed. Our vet sent us to a specialist who was not very optimistic at first. But once she realized that we were going to do everything we could including learning as much as we could she really turned around and was very helpful. Once you start treating Fanconi it just becomes a routine. It was fairly easy and you start to appreciate every day you have with your pooch. The only hard part was the days leading up to the blood testing which we did every 3-6 months. We just didnt want any of the lab values to get worse but if they did we knew we would just deal with it and keep on moving forward. We treated Marley for 7 years. I wouldnt have changed a thing.
