    Hate them?

    I have to ask because I use to give them to Chase all the time when we first got him but then I read some bad things about them blocking in dogs and the dog having to have surgery or dying so I stopped giving them to him. Zahra has never had one.

    I wanted to get some views on them from others.

    hate them. Tucker could rip through one in minutes, and he would swallow chunks, so they are off limits. obviously, any chew should be supervised, but the greenies make me very nervous as they are NOT 100% digestable. so, I feel it's better to be safe than sorry, and avoid them altogether.

    I don't give to Sahara anymore, I have in the past and she liked them but I am afraid of them now. Sahara loves the Dingo brand chicken/rawhide mixed sticks for chewing. I think they are pretty safe, so that is what I give her, and sometimes the rawhide bones, but I get rid of them when she chews off small pieces.

    I decided to avoid rawhide despite Joey doing flips over them. I was at the small local pet store run by a vet today and was given a Merrick Jerky stick to try…not me, my dog Joey!!! :D The info that I got was that it was more quickly digested compared to rawhide so posed less of a potential for blockage. She said raw bones are even better which I already give Joey, but they can be messy. I let him start in on one in his crate. I buy soup bones.
    Oh yes, Joey loved the Jerky but it did not last as long as a rawhide. I still don't want to take the risk with rawhide. As for Greenies, this pet store does not sell them, Joey loved them when he had them from another store, but since he does not have bad breath I don't buy them anymore.

    I've only given mine greenies once…only because supposedly it helps with their teeth (so I was told).

    I love Merricks products!....do their products help with teeth cleaning??

    Not sure how Xylitol is being marketed. It is an alcohol found in a lot of plants, including birch wood, which is the source of Xylitol used in medicines. And it is toxic to dogs, even in small amounts. Most of the time you find it in sugarless gum and candy.     Thank you everybody so much! I appreciate all the info. I had some vanilla Breyer's all natural and gave my guy a taste of that... boy does he seem to think that's a great treat! Obviously, though I don't want that to be the only thing I do. I'm going to follow up with our vet on getting a draw for the full thyroid panel at hemopet once next pay check comes through. You were right he was only checked for T4. Thank again basenji forums! I was looking back at pics from when he was younger and weighed more. I think he's always been a bit taller than standard and had a little barrel chest. Used to call him a basenji bouncer at the dog park. He was all about playing with the labs, pits and other big dogs - probably because he knew he could outrun them if they ever got too rough. He's much more about slow walks with me and lap snuggles these days ❤

    I would find out what he scared of or what he dislikes about the car. Is it the car itself, the sensation of being closed in, the movement when the car is being driven? Then work on whatever the problem is, with food. As for food, I use raw duck and vegetables. And I hand-feed all meals, so I never have a problem with not eating/partially eating. I would also recommend hand-feeding for anyone who does have a dog with food issues. Shredded chicken is good (as long as he doesn't have any reactions). But that and some kibble isn't a balanced meal. You may wish to look into a vitamin supplement, specifically something that has a focus on omega 3 (since chicken is high in omega 6), Vitamin C & the B vitamins (because if all he's eating is chicken and kibble, where is his source of vitamin C and the B vitamins?), zinc & copper (same reasons). All the best. EDIT: I just realized this thread is a year old and was bumped by what is almost certainly a bot.

    8 mos old is still on Royal Canine medium size puppy as recommended by vet. Very interested in how you change up their food. Glad to hear that because I would like to change him from chicken based to something else as adult. Had always been advised not to keep changing food as it was hard on their system. Breeder advised to use high protein and fat dog food (60% protein, 30% fat). What is your opinion on this? I am starting to add 1/2 tsp coconut oil daily to dog food for winter feeding. Advised it had ingredients similar to mother's milk. What say you about this?
