Basenji Feeding

  • Another grain free is Taste of the Wild. I know some people dont like it bc its made by Diamond, but it has good ingredients, and mine are doing really well on it. I top it with Wellness 95% canned (Turkey, Chicken, Salmon, etc) because mine dont like dry by itself.

  • why is it that we feed our dogs better then we feed ourselves lol…I am going to try the Merrick before grain (if my store has it) and try mixing it with the canned. Hopefully the intestinal problems will be kept to a minimum. When you switch dry brands I know they say to mix for a while, but I doubt it would be a good idea to mix the kibble with raw until Nike gets used to it right?

My biggest concern with Taste of the Wild is that there has been no statement on ethoxyquin (a Carcinogenic fat preservative)…even after there have been requests for Diamond to provide the info.

Kibble should never be mixed with raw… raw is always feed separate... if you are changing and getting them used to it, do a small raw meal and then later feed the regular kibble, but not at the same time

    Pat, can you explain why?

I believe I remember that it has to do with digestion of the raw food and that processed kibble interferes with enzymes in raw food that assists with digestion.

  • so here is what I tried…Europa which is a veggie mixture with some other stuff such as garlic and kelp. You mix that with water and raw meat and serve. The only problm is that they would not eat it, not even Nike which would eat a tire if he could! So my mother cooked it, and they loved it, is this bad?

  • Hi Michelle! :)

I was told when Dallas was being picky with eating as a pup that it isn't bad to heat up their food but it will probably only make them more picky in the long run. If they like it heated up you are probably always going to have to heat it up to get them to eat. I feed Dallas kibble, blue buffalo adult & he's been doing great on it. Although I have always fed Dallas kibble so I wouldn't know if he would get sick switching.

  • Mia doesn't like blue buffalo lol…she's just like her momma was when I was young, I would eat nothing but cereal lol...I guess it's coming back to bite me in the butt. I actually just cook it then put it in the fridge, so I could make quite a large batch and freeze it. So we'll see, hope it works

  • I've been feeding my B Blue Buffalo Wilderness. He absolutely loves it. And he's usually very picky with food/treats. He rarely accepts treats unless he has time to inspect it. This food he will just inhale.

  • I have an extremely fussy eater who I find it really hard to keep any weight on. I feed him dry kibble but need to add canned meat to it or sprinkle some live cake into it to encourage him to eat. His favourite is scrambled eggs mixed with the kibble. If I give him that then I know he will eat.

  • Just a bit on the raw diet-raw digests at a different rate than kibble. Feeding raw with kibble does interrupt the digestion process. They will have diarrhea any time you switch over. No matter how careful you are. I would try something that is raw based, but baked. I know Origen up here is like that-it also has no grains. But there is also Wilderness that is based on the same lines. I find, though, that it has grains in it. Depends on how you feel about grains. It really will be trial and error. I would try treating with the dry kibble first and then building up rather than using the kibble as a meal. Just MO.

I would find out what he scared of or what he dislikes about the car. Is it the car itself, the sensation of being closed in, the movement when the car is being driven? Then work on whatever the problem is, with food. As for food, I use raw duck and vegetables. And I hand-feed all meals, so I never have a problem with not eating/partially eating. I would also recommend hand-feeding for anyone who does have a dog with food issues. Shredded chicken is good (as long as he doesn't have any reactions). But that and some kibble isn't a balanced meal. You may wish to look into a vitamin supplement, specifically something that has a focus on omega 3 (since chicken is high in omega 6), Vitamin C & the B vitamins (because if all he's eating is chicken and kibble, where is his source of vitamin C and the B vitamins?), zinc & copper (same reasons). All the best. EDIT: I just realized this thread is a year old and was bumped by what is almost certainly a bot.

Basenjis can be picky about a lot of things food is not one if them. Sometimes I wish it was… Funny thing I never thought I'd say that about my B 1st 2 weeks he didn't eat. Long story, but now he eats everything, yep potato chips too.

Topper,12; Nicky 10, ; and Eddie 8 all eat a combination of 3/4 EVO by Innova, and 1/4 regular adult Innova. We free feed, dry kibble is down all the time, but I think I put about 3 cups out a day, some days they eat it all but some days I don't add kibble at all. Mine do get a bit of whatever we have for dinner, mostly veges, they love all veges as long as they are cooked, especially broccoli and sweet potatoes. IT acts as an appetizer, as soon as they finish their plates they run to the kibble bowls to finsih their dinner. We used cheaper grocery store foods for many years but I felt my dogs deseerved a better quality food so tried several premium brands and settled on Innova. Then when they came out with EVO, I slowly added that but when I went 100% EVO, their poops were a bit loose, so we re-added the regular Innova and it seems to suit them perfectly. Eddie's coat was very coarse when we rescued him, he is soft and silky now. Even though it costs about twice as much as the cheaper stuff, I know they are getting good nutrition and their coats glow and their teeth are clean, so it is worth every cent to me. We are what we eat, and if we eat 'animal by products' (hooves, bones, feathers and even sawdust in some) sprayed with flavors and dyed with food colorings, we may be saving money now, but inviting health probelms in the future. Just MHO, but strangers compliment my dogs on their gloss and vigor! Anne in Tampa, off the soapbox

For "everything you ever wanted to know about corn", read the book "The Omnivore's Dilemma" by Michael Pollan. Corn products are in almost everything anymore, and they affect the way everything is metabolized.

I have learned a lot by going back through old threads. I was wondering what to feed and if what I was feeding was good. Beeji was being fed a dry only diet while at the vet hospital and they said he was a picky eater and wouldn't eat all his kibble at one time. When I got him home, I used a combo of Pedigree and Purina dry but he wasn't eating very much as was losing weight and some tone. I decided to get some Purina wet food, I think I got Mighty Dog and just put a tablespoon of wet into a cup of dry and mixed it completely. Beeji attacked that bowl of food as if he hadn't eaten in days, which he really hadn't. Now that I have read all the other threads and esp. Bryans notes on feeding, I am going to recheck the Kcals and see what wets and drys are best for Beeji. I like Purina so will probably check on their foods first. For treats, Beeji loves peanut butter inside his Kong, and we were given a box of I think milk bone dog bisquits from the vet so I have been giving him a couple of those per day, but want to find some other snacks that he will like. We are having a bit of an argument (hate to say battle of wills with a Basenji LOL) about if Beeji is allowed to get up on me or the table. I say absolutely no paws on the table and so far he is accepting that, but in typical clever dog mode, he puts his paws on my leg, rises up and he isn't technically on the table, but amazingly his head and nose seem to always tilt toward my plate no matter which side he is on!!! So now, we are working on the command off and putting him in a sit away from the table. This has just started and so the success rate isn't there yet. However, he is trying to be a gentleman and tries to stay where he is. I am so lucky and amazed at how well he is behaving given I have no history of him at all. He will let me handle him anywhere on his body. Lets me take food away if he is at his bowl, (we went very slowly with that one!) but he was fine. He lets me check his teeth etc. The only thing I am finding is when he gets excited he wants to mouth me and I don't allow that. Whenever I feel teeth he gets a correction and I ignore him till he calms down. so far he is trying, but occassionally, he has to climb up in my lap and then "nibble" on my ear. What a lover boy! but he immediately stops when I say no. then licks me. And he loves getting in his crate at night. I usually give him just a finger full of peanut butter inside his Kong and/or a treat and he hops right in. He must of had some training before me. Sure wish I knew his history. Thanks for all the good advice. Aloha, Cheryl
