Fanconi testing for newly rescued Basenji

  • Fanconi testing was not done by the rescue group. I adopted my girl this week. I asked the vet who was foster caring the dog about the test and she said all the blood work was fine, but she didn't test specifically for Fanconi.
I'm certain that routine blood work isn't adequate. Am I correct or not?

This little girl was abandoned and wandered the streets homeless for some time. I can't imagine why anyone would dump a purebred Basenji!

  • To get your girl tested, you will need to do two things.

The first, go to the Canine Phenome Project and sign up, it's free.

    http://www.caninephenome.org

Fill out as much as you can of the surveys but don't worry about what you don't know because she is a rescue.

After she is signed up you will need to order a test kit.

    https://secure.offa.org/cart.html

Just select the one for Fanconi Syndrome

  • Thanks for posting this info lvoss… I've been looking into the Fanconi test, and I've registered with the CPP.
So it looks as if next I order the test on this website (is this the cheek swab test?) Is $65 the total cost of the test then? They mail the kit to me, I do the swab, send it back in & I get the results?

Exactly…sooooo much easier than dealing with the blood draw. :D

Hopefully this will encourrage people who have been waiting due to concerns over shipping blood, as the cheek swab should be a breeze.

  • Carrie, that is exactly how it works. The test cost + kit cost is $65 and is paid when you order the kit. Then you follow the directions when you receive the kit and submit the kit and wait for your results.

Daniel, That is the hope. I also like that the lab is using FTA paper now because they don't have to extract all the DNA at one time which will help to keep mistakes from happening.

  • Thank you!! This does make it MUCH easier!

  • Thank you so much, Andrew.

  • I'm so happy the cheek swab test is available.. I moved and changed vets and haven't gotten Meeka to the vet to draw the blood.. I just ordered my test kit though, so much easier then collecting and shipping blood!

I think BRAT and other rescue orgs need to make sure all adopters know how easy it is to test for this now, and should really encourage adopters to do it..

Amen to that….. BRAT does need to (IMO) do the test... or at the very least explain about the test and how to get it done....

The more data that is in the data base, the better people can use the that information as this is a Linkage test only… and errors can be made either human or test....

@etzbseder: Thanks, I've seen that before, but forgot about it. After looking at that, it shows that my answer would be: Clear pups ONLY means that neither parent is affected, and that does not change with multiple clear pups. The only thing that shows any determination of the parents is a test of the parent themselves (or if their grandparents are clear). correct. The more clear pups (with no affecteds or carriers) you had from the breeding of the same two animals, the more LIKELY it is that the parents are clear…but it certainly would not be a for sure.

@Terry: I heard a rumor, wondered if anyone knows if it's true. The rumor was that an affected dog has been identified with 2 clear parents. Pat, I know you're usually up on this… Terry That seems to be the case, Lisa will most likely also chime in. They are now retest that dog along with his parents. As we all know there is always human error and the samples may have been mismarked. I have no doubt in the test (and I know that others will mostly likely use this as a way to discount the test), but I will stand on the over 1100 samples that have already been done and they all seem to be as they should. IMO and I have a sample that was most likely taken at the same time, that there was either a problem when the sample was sent in or there was a problem when the DNA was extracted. At the same time and the sample taken at the same time, there is another dog that is showing as Carrier from two clears… again that is being retested also...
