Basenji Training
  • This weekend the Sierra Slopes Ibizian Hound club had their annual ASFA trials in Sloughhouse, CA. The dogs love the natural field and some like the "water hazard" that is often present this time of year though usually not the basenjis. This year Winifred the basenji was an exception, opting to take a swim when the line broke during one of her courses.

I have a lunge whip, which we've played with ever since I got her. She loves it. I tried her at it on a small course back in July at our club picnic (here's the video, I've posted it before. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0gl6NAGvjow) and she took off like a crazy girl. That was her second time doing it that day. A few months before that she was a little unsure of what to do. So, it sounds like to practice her a number of times to get her highly focused on the lure. I'm guessing Sue might be going to Racine in August, but if you're there too Lisa, I'd appreciate any input on her "focus" if she gets to do some practice runs. Clay

In general, they leave them alone. It is when they have to wait in the boxes because of some delay that they usually get bored enough to try to get them off. In that race there was one basenji that had no box training and really fought the boxes which delayed the race long enough for Levi to wrestle his muzzle off. I do have one basenji who fusses with her muzzle during a race but she is getting better about it and actually won 2 races this weekend even with the fussing. We are going to take the suggestion of a Visla owner and start giving her canned cheese when she wears the muzzle and doesn't fuss to reinforce the muzzle is a good thing. The fuzzy lure was a huge reinforcement but she has some negative associations with the muzzle that we have to work on overcoming.
