Poor dog socialization skills

Behavioral Issues
  • Has anybody dealt with a basenji that simply would not get along with any other dog? Every time he sees another dog he will remain quiet until he's within touching distance and begin to growl. This instigates the other dog who 100% of the time is initially being friendly when approaching him and then instantly turns them into an aggressive dog towards my basenji. It's frustrating that I cannot take him to the dog park when we see other dogs there or let him come over a friends house that has dogs. We've tried professional dog trainers and no success.

If you have had this issue and found a way to resolve it please do tell. I want to be more social with my basenji but I cannot deal with him attacking every dog he sees.

@donc said in Social aggression issues: The good news is if you find a decent dog trainer -- easier said than done BTW -- you should be able to sort this out. There are trainers and there are trainers - and behaviourists among them but please, I beg you, find one with experience of Basenjis. They are not as other dogs, as we all know - but many trainers don't

Thank you so much for the advice! We have never kenneled our dogs before,,,,,,,,,I think that is why we are so hesitant to do that but like you said,,,,,it could be very very stressful taking our two then adding a third at the inlaws where the only animals they have around are a few feral cats that hang around the shed in the back yard. ARRRGGGGGGG!!!!!! Who knew you could stress and worry so much about furbabies!!!!!!!! I swear they ARE just like children!!!!
