Basenji Mix & Tiny Dogs

    Binary, my rescue Basenji mix, loves all people and other dogs, and I even have a picture of her curled up with the cat. (Although the cat insists it's photoshopped.) At the dog park, she will run and romp and roll around with whatever dogs are there. However, she has never been around really tiny dogs in the 3 years I've had her. Two weeks ago I boarded her with a family while I was out of town. Binary attacked the owner's Chihuahua, leaving a wound that required a couple of stitches. Then last weekend at the dog park she attacked a tiny dog, I think a Maltese, weighing about 15 pounds. We rushed the little guy to the urgent care vet who found two wounds, one of which needed a drain. I am baffled. I don't know if she's completely flipped, or if something is wrong with her health. I have an appointment for a health checkup, and I've been keeping her away from other dogs, but I would sure appreciate any insight any members might have. Binary has an extremely high prey drive. I live in the country, and no rodent of any sort will survive long on my property. Given her usually friendly nature, is it possible that she mistook those tiny dogs for rodents? Surely her sense of smell would tell her the difference, wouldn't it?

    I am no expert but I looked at the photo before reading your post and I thought it was one. The classic white shoulders, upright ears, pointed nose and shape of face....I agree a profile view would add but it would not be hard to convince me this dog has some basenji genes.

    I am wondering if my dog is a basenji or a basenji mix? We have had him since he was a puppy and was told he was a pomchi but I don't think he is. What do you all think?

    They may not be very familiar with breeds. I agree with Robyn he looks all Rat Terrier to me. Keep in mind that the Rat Terrier breed does have some basenji blood in it and some have a strong resemblance to basenjis.

    I recently got a Basenji mix. I am not sure exactly what she is mixed with though. She is about 40lbs, but looks almost 100% Basenji. She is very powerful and a little broad chested. I am lucky with her though. She exhibits all the great characteristics of a Basenji, but almost none of the bad ones. :)

    In my personal opinion, basenjis don't get along with most dogs generally unless they are brought up to do so. They are a small package with a big attitude. My dog liked some dogs, others she would have outright wars with, especially if it had anything to do with her territory. My girl had a peeing competition with the scottie terrier across the way from us, every time we let her out, the first thing on her agenda was race off and to reclassify her boundaries! And when the scottie was let out she did the same.
