Here is an article quoting the man that bred the first Labradoodles and how he now regrets making the cross. Of particular interest when you read this, note that in a litter you could get NO non-allergenic pups and that testing of each pup is needed. He also quotes all the other health concerns with this cross.

This is exactly why purebred dog breeders of all breeds cringe at the idea of people "making" their own breeds.

It depends on the cat just as much as it depends on the dog. Does your cat run "prey-like" when frightened? I have 2 cats that have lived with 3 different basenjis. My male cat and my first basenji were pals and often cuddled together. They would wrestle and when the dog got too unruly he'd (the cat) nip him to keep him in line. My female cat ran every time she saw my dog. She was fun to chase and like most basenjis: "thing move, I chase thing!" Cody never ever hurt them and recognized that they were part of his "pack" (for lack of a better term). Cat outside? FORGET IT! He never caught one but boy did he try!

My cats no longer live with my dogs (I moved and the cats stayed with my parents) and I know my female cat is much happier. Elliot my 3yr old is OK with my cats but Morgan my 1yr old chases them. Neither try to hurt them but the stress of being chased is a lot for a 15 year old cat to handle.

I have to agree with Janneke. There are some sport mixes that are very responsibly bred. Most often these dogs are bred for Flyball, and involve a herding breed mixed with a terrier.

The border-staffy mixes mix the drive of the Staffy with the intelligence and trainablility of the herding dogs, but also to mitigate a bit of the herding breed sensitivity. I think a team of 4 Borderstaffys holds the flyball record right now?

They are supposed to be great for what they are bred for. Super-fast, drivey, but with the "off-switch" that is missing in a lot of terriers. They supposedly breed pretty consistent, and the breeders heath test, and try to be responsible.

The border-jack is also really popular in flyball and agility. They are smart, super drivey and hyper.

As far as I know, neither of these mixes has been picked up by the BYB's and Puppy Mills. Neither of these mixes should go to non-sports homes.

Lots of mushers mix greyhound or whippet into their northern breeds to add some speed to their teams. Or they often choose to breed mixed breed dogs that are superior lead dogs or the like.

I see no problem with purpose-bred mixes, as long as their breeders are as responsible with their planning and placements as we would expect from any responsible purebred breeder.

Yup…. my 16+ very long neutered does it... and my girls always have...;)

One of the main reasons small operation breeders don't use AKC dogs is because a breeder sold them a dog under an AKC limited registration, meaning the dog wasn't intended to be breeding stock, and the breeder intended for the puppy to be neutered when it was old enough. Sometimes people decide they are not going to get the puppy fixed, and will use it for breeding…at that point, any puppies produced from that dog are not registerable with the AKC. But the other registeries will sign those dogs up with no questions asked.
