FCI, and Basenji grouping

    Here in Dominican Republic, we go by the Federation Cynologique International,.. which means Basenjis are not hounds, but rather belong with the spitz dogs and primitives…, I believe this is so in most of the world, except US and UK, possibly Australia???? so they compete with spitz and pomeranians. .. NOW, anyone who owns or knows anything about basenjis knows that they are truly hounds... i really don't understand how they can fall in a group with pomeranians!!
    I was wondering if there was any way to petition for this to change.. does anyone have any thoughts!!!!

    I suppose they are there because of the 'primitive' designation but I don't understand why they are grouped with the dogs they are under FCI rules.

    Yeah, i dont really understand the primitive category… Most dogs are grouped by their characteristics or abilities, what they were bred to do, .. Primitive just groups them by history, how old the breed is?... They are grouped with podencos and cirneccos which makes sense, but then also with huskies and malamutes and Pomeranians. the result for me is that instead of competing with the whippets and Italian greyhounds I compete with the spitz and Pomeranians, that makes no sense to me...

    Looks can be so deceiving- here is an article of a woman who adopted a rescue dog in N.J. Dog looks like a basenji - even her vet thought it might be basenji. She did an Embark DNA test - no basenji. Turned out the dog was a mixture of Mountain Cur, Rat Terrier, Beagle, and Boston Terrier. link text

    @weedtrek Possibly Basenji mix, nose looks a bit wider and the eyes are less oval. Could well be a Basenji mix though.

    @ktiefen1 You would be correct!! Potty Training eventually came easy because ours is so treat motivated....lol. Basic obedience is a challenge for us......ahe is definitely her own girl....and please dont disturb her sleep. You could lose a limb. ::)))))

    Where I am it costs about $2K+ for a dog from a breeder for just about any breed. Goldens may be less because the litters are so large. That may seem like a lot, but, as Debra mentions, dogs cost money to care for. After vet bills and boarding fees and food, it matters little what the dog cost to acquire. Leaving true puppy mills out of the discussion, given the costs of being a responsible breeder -- testing, vet bills, feeding -- and how much work breeding is, I can't imagine anyone doing it for the money. That leads to two problems for people looking for dogs. One is that since breeding isn't really lucrative, there aren't a ton of breeders, which means the supply of pups is low. Second is that most Basenji breeders want to place their pups in the best possible homes -- remember they aren't doing it for the money -- which means they're looking for people who have had Basenjis before. Something of a Catch-22.

    There's nothing like a basenji in the works, from the way they instinctively lay with their had on the bum looking the other way ( I've never met a B that doesn't) to the way you KNOW they all rub on wet towels or play bow…it's all very endearing and in this breed you often identify traits that they all have, an insight into their genetics and their behaviors. I've never enjoyed a breed so much.

    OMG, TRUST me…its not only ur baby, Jack has some seporation anxiety, i mean, we rescued him so that may be why, but i Always feel so sad when we leave him, he runs to the window and crys when we leave, but i KNOW it wonly lasts until he cant see us anymore (driving away) my neighbor watched for me. but SOMETIMES he does get into things when we leave for too long. like the other day, when he ate my betta fish food...grr...
