Question on podengos for Diane McCarty

Off Topic
  • My Aunt is looking at adopting a dog from a shelter in Massachusetts that they claim is a Podengo.

Its seems strange to me that a breed as rare as the Podengo would end up in a shelter. Is it a mis-categorization?
    Is there Podengo rescue?

I am sending my Aunt the link to your website. Is there any other info out there I should consider sending to my Aunt?

    Thanks so much,

    Nicole

  • It most likely is (sort of) If you are in sections of the country where there are a lot of Portuguese - many of them had dogs sent over or brought over with them from Portugal to use in rabbit hunting. The older hunting pack goes back to the late 1890's. They do not register them and it is unclear if the lines have remained pure or if they have included other hunt pack dogs. I have trying to establish some contacts within the hunt community but at this point - we have to focus on making sure the documented dogs are placed where they are safe and can continue with the breed.

Much as a basenji - they are not for everyone. It appears that the middle size may be the more problematic and I'm not too sure why. I will tell you - after having a barkless dog that it's hard to get used to any barking.

She looks like a nice little dog - and is trained some - happy to provide information should your aunt choose to adopt her.

Podengo temperament - first as I said before they have a softer temperament than basenjis - harsh corrections result in a dog that will melt into the ground. The Medio size (keeping in mind I do not live with this size) needs to be kept busy - they are active and appear to do well when there is some pretty physical exercise and brain activity for them. Lure coursing, agility, even rally can keep them happy and focused. A couple of foks are going to try them at fly ball. All sizes like to hunt and must always be behind a fence or on a leash. I find that the Grande (BIGS) are a bit more laid back. They love to run, they will catch bunnies and birds on the fly and in Portugal they run down boar and stag. Their preference appears to be investigating their enviroment for any changes and sleeping on the couch. If you think of primitive hounds of the Mediteranian Basin - you get what a Podengo looks like and how they are. Similar to Ibizan, Pharoh Hound, Cirneci, basenjis etc. The little size - pequeno is a breed apart - it is smaller 8-12 inches and is not a bred down big it is longer than tall and is a rabbit hunter in thick brush. @RDA007: Thank you. Just when I thought I had a handle on all this, I discover more to learn. Hmm, guess you can teach an old dog new tricks! Thanks again for your help. Oh, there's always more to learn. ;)

@wizard: Ah, but that was the old names for these hybrids. Now the PC term is anything with "oodle" at the end. No no no. If we're going to be PC, the correct PC term is "Designer Breed." Because you don't want to leave out the "ugles" of the world (pugles & the like), and it sound so fancy, like a dog Paris Hilton would have. I love it when people assume my girls are some unique & exotic (mixed breed) designer dogs, and they are always dissappointed when I tell them "No, its just a unique & exotic purebred primitive dog that's been around much much much longer than designer dogs." I actually had somebody at the dog park ask me if they were basenjis one day, and I replied Yes they are. They then asked "So they're miniatures?" I said "No, they are both within standard, just at the very small end of the standard." They insisted again they were toy basenjis. Whatever.

@dmcarty: I typically only breed when I have some good home lined up as well. But when I started to investigate the breed - there were 19 Podengo Grande Smooth registered in the world. So I started the project to see what we in the US could do to increase the numbers and to motivate those breeders in Portugal to register their dogs. We are starting to see some success and never in my wildest dreams did I think I would have 11 puppies. I do have some homes and some will go to different parts of the US for breeders of other size Podengo to show off, I have a few that are staying by me and a friend has offered to take in a couple to continue socializing when I have to go back to school in the fall. Once they get their shots and I can get them out and about - I think I will see some interest. My good friend Wendy (Harehill Hounds) has been very helpful in building some interest in the Beezer community as well. It really sounds that you know what you are doing, so everything will turn out fine , I am sure about that! meanwhile you can show us loads of pictures of the bunch :D
