    We contacted MMI in Davis, CA to do their canine test. While many have speculated on what she is and isn't, we wanted a real answer to "Who are You"! For $80, we'll have the results back in 4-6 weeks, and will post a definitive answer. We been amazed at the numbers of forum users who have taken a quick peek at her. Since there are others of you with a mixed breed and wondering…this might be something to think about.

    ALM - Is the canine test through MMI in Davis affiliated with the university? Just curious. I went to UC Davis for my undergraduate degree and remember that their veterinary medicine programs were highly regarded & I vaguely remember talk about dog DNA testing (which sounds like the test you are having done to answer "Who am I" for your pooch :-) I was just wondering if the MMI is a private company or if it is affiliated with the school?

    Hi Chellie-
    The company is based in Maryland, been around since 1994, I believe, and is known for doing different animal testing. The test we received came from Davis, CA, so you might be right. Here is the web site…hope this helps.

    Hi Chellie-
    We had heard that the UC Davis area was very well known for it's vet activities. That said, we're not vets! This was just a way to get a sense of learning what this special dog is, that we've become so attached to. Any answer we get will only make her more special!

    I used Wisdom Panel for my assumed Basenji mix. It showed no basenji at all. My boy is 32 lbs and short hair. His DNA says he is 25% American Eskimo 12.5% Boston Terrier 12.5% Chow Chow 12.5% German Shepherd 12.5% Miniature Schnauzer 25% Breed Group-Sporting, Herding, Hound, Terrier. Having owned basenjis all my life I would say my boy has basenji in him by his personality and behavior regardless of what his dna says!!

    OMG soooo cute. Her colouring and face don't look like a basenji, but maybe she's mixed with something with stronger genes. Do a DNA test. That would be fun!

    So pretty and unique; glad that you ended up getting him and hopefully he never has to find a new home again…moving and being displaced really can mess with a dog (or anyone for that matter)...hope you have many years of great fun and mischief.

    The traits you described are also found in most of the Nordic/spitz type dogs. I don't see anything overly basenji-ish about him in the pics. What ever he is, he's very hansome.

    Yeah, he loves to chew. Right now it's defluffing tennis balls and cracking them open that entertains him. And chewing on sticks. I do have a kong he loves. High quality treats like pigs ears and such wouldn't do well here as there would be fights over them by all the dogs here, even if I gave each one one, they always want that which another dog has. I do have a few nylabones but he isn't too interested in them at the moment.

    Rafismom, we started him out in a crate, but he hated it. Cried something fierce. We then started leaving him in my son's room, and he was absolutely fine….well, until he started crying again. Then we gave him roam of the house while we were gone, and have had no problems at all. Yes, I know. I'm lucky! He absolutely hates for us to leave, but he's good while we are gone. No complaints here, for sure. Maybe it's the possible black lab that mixed in that makes him so calm? He has his moments, especially outside when he sees a squirrel, etc., but overall he's a very calm pooch. Just last week, I was walking the dog at a local park when I hear a woman saying something about the dog. She was a good distance away. I then realize she was talking to me and asked if my dog was friendly. I said, "yes" and she came over to pet him. She told me that the dog reminded her of her first dog. She said her first dog was a basenji. After more chatting, she said that it was actually a basenji mix, but that my dog looked a lot like hers. She told me how much she loved that dog and told me all sorts of stories about her. Such a nice lady. Gave me a few bits of advice and about a half hour later we parted ways. This is my first dog, and I've been amazed at how friendly other dog people are when I'm walking him. This has been a great experience.
