The Dog Catcher - happy ending

Basenji Talk
  • When I moved to Okinawa I took my basenji with me of course. I believe she was the only one on the island.

One morning I opened the door and she bolted. The dog catcher was at the end of the driveway. On Okinawa the dog catcher rides around in a truck with a big cage on the back and he has a loud speaker that plays the sound of kids playing and calling their dogs. Well, the dog catcher nabbed my dog even though I was just two feet away. He wouldn't give her back even though the crazy American woman was yelling at him in Japanese he just ignored me. I followed the truck around in my car and got out every time he stopped. Still wouldn't give me my dog.

I found out where the dog pound was (conveniently located next to a medical research facility by the way). I got my husband from work and we drove like mad. Japanese cars have a bell behind the seat and when you exceed the speed limit the bell dings. Well, needless to say the bell dinged all the way to the pound!! When we got there the guy behind the desk wasn't too helpful. He collected about a fifty bucks from me and opened a door to the back of the building. There were huge cages with all kinds of dogs mixed together. My dog was nowhere to be seen. The guys at the pound really thought I was crazy when I just stood in the middle of the room and started calling my dog. As soon as she heard my voice she started barooing and my husband and I started zeroing in on her. We opened the door and there were a bunch of pure bred dogs in individual cages. Wow, they must have know what she was!! We snagged her and got her out of there pronto!! What an experience!! She never tried to get out when she heard the sound of the dog catcher again!!

  • Woah! That is a crazy story! I'm glad it all worked out in the end!!

  • OMG   that sounds scary!! Note to self…never move to Okinawa.

  • I would have just stood just like you did, and my hubby probably would have gone as biserk as me. He loves my Sahara, I have never seen a man so crazy about a dog as he is about my girl. I am so glad it turned out good, that was too close for comfort. :D

I have had a couple stained glass made, but there is normally a 3-4 month lead time as the artists are already booked up for Xmas this yr. Most of the artists on etsy will be booked this late in the yr, I had two quilts and a needle felt made a couple yrs ago and I placed my order in June in order to guarantee Xmas delivery. If you have a nice photo, there is a company called treasure knits that does wonderful woven afghans out of a photo with about a one week turn around. I have had both afghans and pillows made from photos as xmas gifts from them and they do great work.

Well, the lab I mentioned (chocolate overweight one) almost took me out by slamming into my knee. I commented loudly " he better not insure my knee!" No comment from the owner. Others were keeping an eye on this over exhuberant dog too. Many peeps were standing behind a bench for protection. What really bugs me is that the park has very visible signs when you enter it that say you must have control of your dog.

When Cory and Jayden get into something special (in their eyes) that they suspect they aren't supposed to have, they go and hide in a chair so they can examine it and chew it in private. There is no "Let's go show Mom!". Often Cory will rat Jayden out. She will make such a fuss that I've learned to recognize her "tattling" ruckus. If I want to get on the computer, I have to secure them in the room with me or put them outside. If not, Jayden WILL find something for them to get into. He is tall for a basenji and I swear he can use his front paws like hands! Pat

Very nice work Basenjibratz! They look totally comfortable! And I agree that once the basenjis are used to other dogs, and have a chance to acclimate, often things go quite well. It is that initial interaction that often goes so well! You have done some great work.

We take our kids as many places as we can… hiking swimming running/jogging- nature trails parks doggie events (like ours!! www.firstgiving.org/bdawg) I've taken Lexi to do lure coursing a few years ago- it was fun, but she wasn't as in to it as I thought she might be; our dobie was FAR superior! lol
