• Hello Christine!

I've never met a Basenji that grunted (except if they get too fat)! Mine tend to just get obnoxious and pushy when they want something-then annoy until they're either put in their crates or get what they want(doesn't happen too often though) tee hee!!

  • Hi Arlene,
Thank you for replying. Amy is fit and in shape. I think that she grunts at us because she thinks that she can push my dad into giving her what she wants (just like a child). Ive also seen her become demanding with my dad. They have their tv buddy/tv pal time where they go on the couch, lay together on the couch and watch tv. When she wants to go for a walk, she gets up from the couch and sits beside the couch and stares at my dad and does this little side to side dance demanding my dad to take her on a walk. Its cute, but she is really smart. She is attached to my dad to the hip because he is retired and stays at home with her all day everyday. My mom is at work everyday, so Amy is more attached to my dad than my mom. Also, whenever its time to go to sleep, Amy "asks" my dad to put her in the bed. So my dad has to pretend that he is going to bed and gets under the blankets and she'll go under the blankets and cuddle with my mom or sleep in my dad's part of the bed until he goes to bed. Also, if Amy is taking a nap and you tuck her in a blanket, she growls and gets really mad. Have you heard of this happening? If so, what could it be from? Another thing….when you pet her, she love her petting time, but she actually asks you by scratching your arm to keep petting her if you stop petting her. Its a never ending thing. Is this a case of brattyness or spoiled princess syndrome?

  • Andrea,
Your basenji is so adorable! I just noticed the photo a minute ago. Very cute!

  • I would say definitely spoiled. She has learned that when she wants something, being annoyying will get her attention-good or bad.

  • Arlene,
When Amy tucks her nose in her blankey (when she lets us tuck her in), or covers her nose with her hand, is it like a child sucking their thumb or a comfort thing? Sorry for all of these questions. I know I have too many.

  • I would say no it isn't a comfort thing necessarily. Don't forget B's are primitive and still have a lot of 'wild dog' mannerisms. These are den creatures that like to be 'buried' on their terms. My Shadow and Sugar love to be 'buried' - when they want to be. They like their eyes covered for some reason-haven't figured that one out yet. (maybe to darken the room) Questions are fine.

  • This would explain why my B the other day covered his face with his paw when he was sleeping during the day. He looked so cute..

Could be!! Yes, aren't they cute when they're sleeping??? And then they wake up!!

Yeap we always say "why can't he always be like this" while he is sleeping or relaxed. Always quietest before the storm.

  • ha ha ha lol ditto on the sleeping…

My little girl TOPAZ likes to bury herself in a blanket when she's on the couch with me or she sticks her noise in my arm or under my leg. She likes to prop herself up on my husbands arm or leg. Sometimes she'll lift her head up from inside the blanket to see what the raucus is about and lays her chin on your arm & then decides ahhh I'll just keep sleeping LOL 😃 It's pretty hysterical 😃 😃

  • Hollie loves to bury herself under the covers on the bed. She almost always has her nose covered, either with a blanket or her paws. I think it's because her nose is always COLD (very cold) and she is trying to keep it warm!

OMG! The "mind meld stare"…that's a perfect way to describe it! Mine does the "hrumphf" thing too. Sometimes it sounds like a sneeze, because if you're near it, you get snotted.
