Pyoderma

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Hi all…

as for the rash.....to find out, the rash was called PYODERMA, Cali is taken Clavamox every 12 hours for 3 weeks, Chlorhexiderm Shampoo every 2-3 days, andHydroxyzine every 8-12 hours as needed that for the itching.

Cali is doing fine the PYODERMA is not spreading no more so thats a good thing, I was talking to her vet, she said it was common in puppies.

just want to know if anyone has had this in there Basenji's

    Mark/Cali

  • Mark can u post of pic of what the rash looks like??

  • Hi Mark,
Boy if I had a nickel for every time Nala was on Clavamox! They actually never diagnosed what the rash(es) were but let me tell you…we even went to the doggie dermatologist in NH (Vicky Sheit?? something like that) All I can say is "hang in there!" Nala is now 8 and I can't remember whether she was on it past 2 years old (YIKES!) But it was fairly mild but as a puppy, she lost the hair around her eyes and spread out a bit from there...
Don't stress too much about it, but keep an eye on it and take her to the specialist if it doesn't clear up or keeps recurring...

@Saving Thanks so much for the information! I am researching further and continuing with her rehab exercises as best I can. Glad you recovered from your spinal injuries.

@Rebel - Full blood workup including full Thyroid panel (full panel no just what the normal vet workup that is not a full thyroid panel)... as they say make sure that he is in good health. Also what are you feeding him? How much total are you feeding a day? Also with reducing food, add veggies to his food to fill his belly... green beans are good to use... I use Cauliflower and Broccoli... Note also that low normal is typically too low for Basenjis.

To give you an idea of the contrast between Basenjis and Border Collies, my BC once spit out a pill, I said "Blackie" in a disapproving tone, and he picked it up from the floor and swallowed it!

@mryltis Read this comment from @morgansc within this post dated May 30, 2019, 7:49 AM. It answers your question. Ideally it is best to wait until age 24 months but no early than 18 months. https://basenjiforums.com/post/177284
