Any Basenjis in Vancouver or Victoria? (Or in-between?)

  • Re: [Are there any basenji meeting groups in the Vancouver](Canada area?)

    Hi all!
I'm a newbie here, and am looking into getting a Basenji puppy sometime this year or early next. However, I've never met a Basenji in 'real-life', and I would love to get together with someone who does or join a meetup before making a definite commitment. Currently I'm living on campus at UBC in Vancouver, but home for me is in the Victoria, BC area.
    Cheers,
    Dorota.

  • I have a fabulous breeder north of Seattle. She is not that far you could go for a weekend and meet her puppies. They are by far the calmest basenjis I have ever met and I have a 7 year old brother and sister. Her name is Rita Webb. No ka oi basenjis. You can probably google her and she is on Facebook. I'm in Calgary and I flew to Seattle to go pick up my boy, and his sister was shipped.

  • Terrarust Basenjis (and Labradors) is in Delta. She mostly breeds Labs now but she has Basenjis around I'm sure. Also owns and operates Delta Kennels boarding facility. This is the only email address I have for her: info@deltakennels.com

  • Beaubri Basenji's in mission bc are one of the top basenji breeders in bc if not Canada. If you are still looking I would get in touch with Simone she is the breeder.

I'm so sorry. I didn't realize you had responded. I thought I'd get an email. Zoey is definately NOT good off leash. It would be great to find a fenced area…I know there is a dog park (with a small dog area) near me, but I don't know how you feel about driving. (I've commuted for years, so I'm used to it). I could probably call Bear Mountian the park to see if they allow dogs. I'm working tomorrow, but I'll try to find out on Tuesday. Also, there is some sort of an event in Woodstock, NY (beautiful town), sponsored by the Rip Van Winkle Basenji Club. I am totally new to all of this stuff, so I'm not sure what goes on there, but here is a link....I thought you might be interested. If I'm not working I may go just to check it out. http://www.rvwbasenjiclub.org/June.24th.Match.html

Find a good positive reinforcement puppy class, like clicker training and you will both have fun. All of mine have earned at least a rally novice obedience title and love the training. There are some things that you should not expect of a basenji such as being outside off lead. They are sighthounds and must be on a lead or in a fenced area at all times. The biggest issue with a house with children is that the children must understand the door can never be left open. My inlaws have a terrible habit of wanting to stand in the doorway and talk as people leave. I have to shoo them outside so the dogs do not try to dart outside given the opportunity. We have had ten basenjis since our son was two, he is now 27 and the basenjis raised him.

I'm so sorry for your loss, that truly breaks my heart. I have two basenjis, I don't know what I would do without them. They are my world. Bengy and Tyson are their names. If you would like Cecil to have a play date I wouldn't mind, I think I'd be awesome!
