CA-Sacramento-12 Yr. Old R&W Male Possibly PB-On Craigslist

Basenji Rescue
  • Owner has to rehome this boy and wants him to go to a loving home. Does not even know if he is PB! No mention of neuter, vaccines, etc. Is anyone nearby that could check to see if he is PB? I cannot tell by the picture if he is PB.

  • Local BRAT coordinator was taking care of this one. The owner did submit a form to BRAT.

From what I was told, this Basenji is a mix, the owner is homeless, and the dog is currently in a shelter/kennel situation until funds run out. Trying to network with other rescue groups to find a good home for him (like Muttville, Bay Area rescue that specializes in seniors). Please share if you know someone who can help!

Oh how heartbreaking! Homelessness, especially when an older person and pet are involved, is about as depressing as a situation can get.

  • He does not look too big though. I hope there is a rescue group that can take him! He looks to be in good shape for a 12 year old. For some Bs, 12 is not that old!

  • I received this from Lori who is the BRAT Mix Coordinator:

Yachtz is a sad and difficult case due to his age. He is 12 years old, in excellent health, up to date on vaccinations and sadly been in a Kennel for over 4 months now. His owner has fallen on very hard luck finding herself homeless after hospitalization and is devastated that her longtime companion now has no one to provide for him and keep him safe as he lives out his life. The local ASPC graciously stepped up and paid part of the kennel fees but that was a while ago and now there is again a sizeable bill of over $1000. The kennel owners understand though that they will never be able to recover these fees and have been absolutely great in this situation, they do not want to see Yacthz euthanized, they say he is still a vibrant and healthy mix. He is bigger, about 50 pounds but has the Basenji yodel and coloring. They are willing to work with any group who can get him into a home, be it foster care or a forever home. Understandably though, he needs to be out of the kennels!

According to his longtime owner,…. Yachtz sounds aggressive around bicycle riders, skaters of both skate board and any type of roller skates. He is also sensitive to motorcycles. He was like this when we adopted him in 2003 and have no idea what may have happened to him in his early years. Yachtz also can be aggressive at meal or snack time if another dog is near his food. He will protect his food… He does not have a bite history but may do better living out his senior years as an only dog or with an owner experienced enough to deal with these characteristics effectively.

Yachtz’s owner is still homeless and has been told once that Yachtz had already been euthanized, please help us to help his owner rest easy in this difficult time by assuring that Yachtz will have the opportunity to have a wonderful forever family to live out the rest of his natural life. If you have a warm spot in your heart and home that Yachtz might occupy for the rest of his life please contact Ray Eckart, BRAT Coordinator. Ray is helping the owner and kennel owner to find a safe resolution for this sweet pup.

Usually if the owners say a dog is housetrained to the shelter but then the dog messes in the kennel, the shelter will sometimes either state partially housetrained or unknown. Many times, rescues who helps with the dogs from the shelter will state that the dog keeps the kennel clean and goes immediately outside when walked so they assume the dog is housetrained. I hope they were adopted together! Jennifer

I'm so glad that those girls ended up with such a good home, lucky them, and lucky you too! I really like the dark brindle one, I'd inquired about her, so I'm happy you have her. Now I know where she is. @avdpierre: Now I just need to find names….their names are Shotgun (not a girls name) and Bella. I would really like African names. My last B was Sundiata Ngoma Kibushi. He was the best B ever! I like the name Shotgun, though it may be better suited for a sporting dog, and as for it not being a girl's name, who sez? If it were me, I'd be keeping the name Shotgun, Bella? that would be the name I'd be changing.

I found the same dog on Petango.com this morning… here is the link: http://www.petango.com/Adopt/Dog-Basenji-14601979 The information states, Benny was surrendered to us and is a bit timid at first, but once she warms up she will love you. She is very attentive to herself most of the time, but she is extremely treat motivated and takes them politely. We think she'd be a great companion for a patient and caring family that would take time to work with her. Call 563-582-6766 to speak to an adoption representative at Dubuque Regional Humane Society I hope Mr/Miss Benny is adopted soon!
