    I adopted Hollie from a local shelter in December 2006. She is a Basenji/Whippet mix and quite a handfull! Her curiousity and antics keep our family laughing at her constantly. She is the princess of her domain.

    ANd why? I'm looking into getting one…but honestly have not heard of them before. Everyething I'm researching makes them sound like the perfect dog for me...

    Basenjis are an awesome breed, but very different from other dogs. THey are good that they don't have a doggie odor and they don't shed. They are escape artists (like getting out of fences), they have to have plenty of exercise, most (at least mine) have to be on a leash when not fenced in, they are very independent and can be stubborn. If you have the patience it takes and like to be active the basenji could possible be the right dog for you. I recommend rescuing one (BRAT), but you may prefer to buy from a breeder. Either way I wish you the best.

    They also need to have plenty of available things they are allowed to chew on! They are not a dog that can be allowed to get bored while unattended, not if you value your shoes, pencils, pillows, chair legs. . . .

    Awesome breed,though! No doubt about it. I'm glad I stumbled into them.
    I'd always heard about them when I was a kid,but it was just that they were "those African Barkless dogs". That's all I knew.
    I'm hooked now though.
    Two years ago Bloodhounds were my favorite dog. Now it's Basenji all the way! There are just no other dogs like them.

You should be able to find a clicker at most pet stores, but in absence of one it's easy to use a marker word or a click from your tongue. The advantage of a physical clicker is that there is not intonation as there may be with the voice, so the sound is neutral, the disadvantage is that you need to have it in your hand, which isn't always convenient.

    Welcome to you and Snicker. I'm pleased that you said 'accident' - it's definitely not Snicker's fault. If you follow the advice gicven by previous posters you'll very soon have the perfect housetrained Basenji. They are generally very clean little creatures and in my opinion are the easiest dog to housetrain.

    @mauigirl: Okay I actually went and found the e-mail I sent in to order the collar. The collars are from Northwind Catalog. Their medium collar is adjustable from 10" to 16" On the first collar I ordered I requested that it be 3" smaller than the medium size (Zip, girl), and the second I ordered I asked it to be 2" smaller (Riley, boy, bigger). In hindsight the medium as is would have been fine. On both of our dogs the collars are adjusted to just about as big as they can go so 13" on Zip and 14" on Riley (his is snugger going over his head but still loose around his neck). And the allowance looks to be 3" (that extra loop in a martingale that make it instantaneously adjustable) Sorry that took me so long, I ended up staying at work til 1am that night! Thank you very, very much !! It's past midnight now so I'll check it in the morning. Greetz UPDATE : Yes, they are the right size !:D

    Giza swam in the Atlantic once when we were out walkin' at low tide and the tile came in. The Atlantic in Canada is pretty cold!

    Hey thanks! A Basenji owner's manual is exactly what I've been looking for. The more I learn about these amazing creatures, the more I realize that everything I've ever known about dogs and puppy training is pretty much useless! These guys have rules of their own! I will send for my copy right away. I really appreciate all of the help I've received from everyone here so far. It's already proven extremely helpful. No help like that from those with "on the job" experience! I look forward to sharing my experiences with Missi and Cooper as well. Thanks again! ~Beth
