  • Humane Society Rescues 11 Dogs in Poor Health

Faith will be a mother to 8 to ten puppies any day, but she's 14 years old and this is her umpteenth litter.

Cathy Wells with the West Texas Humane Society says it looks bleak.

"There is a lot of concern that there's a possibility she may not survive," Wells said.

Faith was confiscated by Hockley County deputies from her owner, J.G. Alford, along with five other labs, and five basenjis after a tip on Sawyer Brown's show on Newsradio 1420.

"We got a anonymous call, and off we went to check it out," Wells said.

Humane society volunteers went to the residence and notified deputies of the conditions.

"An old bathtub full of food, feces piled up two to three feet," Wells said.

We called Alford, and he told us he has been breeding dogs for the past eleven years. He has recently been sick and hasn't taken care of his animals as good as he should have. he also told us he sold puppies to any pet store that would buy them.

"The labs, I was told by Mr. Allford, he would run an ad in the paper and people would come out to his home and buy them," Wells said. "And I am going to say he told me he sold the basenjis exclusively to bonnet pet center in the mall."

Nancy, an employee at Bonnet Pet Center, issued this statement:
"We do not know Mr. Alford. We get a hundred calls a day from people selling puppies. We have a health guarantee and a vet checks out the puppies. We do everything we can.

Eye problems, tumors, hair loss, and decaying teeth just a few of the health concerns for the labs.

"The labs at Lollipop Kennel, groomed and treated will all be available for adoption," Wells said.

And the basenjis now under the care of a basenji rescue group.

"If we don't stop the backyard breeders and the puppy mills this will continue," Wells said.

    This situation not isolated.

"We have been notified of several others and are checking into it," Wells said. "It happens every day."

However, this time, faith and her soon to be family have a much better chance at a happy ending.

I rescued a young Sheltie/Basenji mix many years ago from a Columbus OH shelter for BEAR-Basenji Education and Rescue. She was trouble for the shelter and was kept in a separate area. She loved to lure course and she also would go after balls and bring them back to you! Looked just like a Basenji but with longer fur and her tail was not tightly curled. Dr. Tracy used to joke that we could trim her and get an ILP number from AKC! She found an excellent home. Jennifer

Our Mickey gets pretty nippy when excited, too, and it was much more of a problem when he had those crazy sharp puppy teeth, but now at 1 yr old he responds pretty quickly to "gentle" and "kisses", "no bite" prompts. But when he gets too worked up I have to just walk away because his first instinct is to mouth & he doesn't seem to know his own strength. Someone mentioned winter activities - I would strongly suggest looking into getting a Varsity Ball (if you google it it should come up) - they are indestructible and big! Def for outdoor only. My guy likes to roll his around and try to stand on it - it's pretty funny. And it's almost the only time you'll hear him growl and bark - he gets so worked up with it that I have to put it away sometimes or else the neighbors will think he's vicious (he sounds it when playing with this thing!). BUT he comes in from outside panting and exhausted, so it's a nice alternative for him. I would caution, though, that bc the ball is really hard, he's knocked it into our rain spouts and caused them to fall down. So just be careful if you have anything outside that could get damaged.

Reading the story in the first link, I didn't look at the others after that, literally made me nauseous. It's hard to imagine a person could do that to any living creature and I hate the fact that animal abuse laws have not been updated and therefore do not give out as harsh of punishments as they should.

Getting the gov. involved won't do anything but hurt the legal folks. Just look at byb who go over the "legal" limit for ownership of animals in their care, or horders, who don't do even legal mandated care… Its going to take education and spay/neuter of any animal who leaves a shelter. It's going to take years...I only hope I see it in my lifetime.

hi sharon. I feel like I know you. I have read your stuff on Brat. I am glad that you are getting the word out on Brat. Mabel, My B was adopted from there. I cannot say enough good things about people in that organization. Actually I'm in that organization. We are good people. Mabel's foster was very helpful with helping me understand her behavior. I think a lot of it was due to fact Mabel is an alpha female. Well just thought I would say hi bubsgram94
