  • What size crate would you guys say is best for an adult Basenji to comfortably stay in for a few hours at a time? I'm looking at various places to get an idea of crate pricing, and there are so many different sizes. :o

  • My personal preference is a 300 series size wire crate… I use General Cage brand that fold flat when not in use or traveling. The size I use is 21 3/4 W x 30 L x 24 H
I have used these at home for all my B's over the years.. I also have that size in the RV for travel... However in my Van I use the small 200 size... which is fine for short trips... or shows... easier to lug around at shows...

@eeeefarm - Totally agree with both of you, while I don't do the "restrain the pup", but if it works great and in a pinch it does work for me if really needed. When we have pups (babies) and Mom is tired of them and puts herself in a position that they can't reach her, they turn to the next adult in the house.... same thing will happen if they get over excited and yes, I have seen Basenji Moms, pin the pup to the ground and/or other adults in the home.... so it is something that a pup understands. Walking away works for me... or I try to change up the "game" by turning to working their minds and getting them to think about other things. In the Basenji Breed this is another way of teaching them that the prior behavior is not acceptable. They learn pretty quickly. Thanks for posting this thread eeeefarm... well needed...

@zande - I have place pups at 9wks, but typically to prior Basenji owners, they know the "ropes"... also I do eyes at 9wks, so 10 works better for me in placing pups and yes...(LOL) mine are raised in the home, no kennel.... and the breeders that I know that use kennel runs, still have their pups in the house for house time and "education".....

@klangill I asked in the Facebook San Diego (CA) Basenji Meetup group about trainers. A member recommended Crewsn K9 Academy. https://www.crewsnk9academy.com/ I posted early in this thread about checking with the local breed club, South Coast Basenji Fanciers, for advice.

Not sure why someone said that is separation anxiety. I've been through it and from what you wrote it just sounds like you may need to get more aggressive with housebreaking 101. Are you using a crate? Basically make sure she goes after sleeping, shortly after eating and don't leave her out of your sight if she hasn't gone for a while. You can figure if she has gone, she should be ok to roam the house a bit, but if she hasn't you may be taking a step backwards (and into a wet spot). Praise her like crazy after she goes outside. If you ever catch her going, give her a stern NO! and run her outside. She should learn going outside is GOOD and going inside is BAD. Is the flap like a doggie door? If so, you may want to put a bell on it so you know when she is in or out to reinforce the behavior. As far as the rain…. well, yeah that is a never ending problem. Basenji's sure hate rain. I have to walk out with mine and keep tossing them in the grass until they go, then give them tons of praise when they do. I've been putting up with that for 13 years. Your idea of walking in the rain is good. Keep it positive. Negative associations are hard to overcome. Good luck.

We just started using a target stick and clicker. so far Buddy can do a full circle on his hind legs. just a trick for Jocelyn to play with Buddy while she waits for her individuals in Jrs instead of hand stacking Buddy the WHOLE TIME and getting him/her frustrated, tired, and bored just before it really counts that he is alert and ready to go for the judge.
