Post sterlization & hernia operation

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Zsa Zsa came back home today after her operation and the vet told me to watch her incisions and to wipe it down with water should it get aggravated. She is my 1st female and wanted to know if this is normal and what else can I use to keep the area clean & disinfected (polysporene) and aside from not letting her play with her 2 big brothers or go down stairs for 2 weeks (this is going to be interesting) what else do I need to worry about.
    Tks,

  • I have never had to put anything on a spay incision… just keep her from licking it.... and I never restricted play per say.... all of my bitches would indicate when they felt good enough to play...

  • Thank you for the information.

@toeloop840 Sadly we fought it for 7 months and lost her. She was my heart dog and the prognosis was for a year or more but she simply crashed with every new protocol. None of us figured in her autoimmune issues. Hopefully you can get your dog eating. Cyproheptadine is fairly cheap if your vet will write a script. The other one.. blanking on it.. isn't very expensive either.

If all else fails, a thyroid panel might be needed– but typically that is more base of and tail area, all-over etc.

Thank you everyone for your kind thoughts and good "vibes." AJ is doing grat now. Stools are normal and his activity level is back. You're right…he is a special boy. He did drink lots of water after this little episode, but that's tapering off too. Thanks again, y'all. :)

@BasenjiMaya: Thank you for the help. I really appreciate everyone's input. Our plan is to have her spayed so we'll see if the vet can take care of the hernia then. (We'd love to breed her, but I just don't think we would be able to put in the care and planning with breeding. But Basenji's are so adorable, it's hard to say no to breeding.) It is pretty simple to have it fixed with spay… and as far as breeding there is lots that goes into it along with planning and care..and finding the right homes and being prepared to care for those pups for their lifetime... especially money.... so I think you are making the wise decision
