    Simon and Annie are both doing great. It's been busy and chaotic (and I still haven't posted pics!) But I will :)

    Annie has not yet decided to love the crate. I think she'd be happy if I crated her with Simon, but Simon's not thrilled with that idea, so I have not pushed it. She's at an obnoxious age and she wants to chomp on him or step on his head, so I don't blame him. (But maybe there's a way to speed up the process of persuading him?)

    I've had pretty easy crate puppies in the past, so I don't have a whole bag of tricks up my sleeve! Last night she gave me a scare by getting so revved that she ended up getting her foot badly twisted in the crate blanket. She is fine, limping a little, but no more blankets for her! (Suggestions for blanket substitutes??)

    I know that calm and easy is the way to go. She settles down eventually, but she's quite the loud girl :D. My stepdaughter is getting married at the end of the month and we're supposed to stay in a hotel for two nights. If it were today, I think she'd be too loud for a hotel. My backup plan is to board her at my vet, and I would rather do that than "rush" the crate program we're on. We got DAP spray and we put the crates next to each other and I figure we just have to keep it going.

    I'd probably use the kitchen gated off if she weren't a superhero jumper/climber! She can jump to the counter from the floor. And does.

    Anyway, we're not frazzled and we have a backup plan for the wedding hotel, but I thought I would put the blanket question and the "any other thoughts?" question out to the group basenji mind. Thanks!

    Did she get her foot twisted up in the blanket because she ripped or put holes in it? You might want to just try a crate pad. I love the Bully Pads, http://www.upco.com and then seach for Bully Pads. Not to say that she will not be able to destroy it, but they hold up pretty well.

    And I had to laugh… she is a Tri, right??? Otherwise known as "flying monkeys"!!!! and I can relate since she is related to C-Me (the Tri Mountain Goat).....

    Haha, yeah, I think she's a goat! She hops up on the counter and then looks at you like, "hi, I was looking for treats up here." She clearly sees the world three dimensionally. I'm pretty sure she thinks she could get airplanes if she just tried harder.

    Yeah, we think she put a hole in it and then wound herself around. It scared the crap out of me, to be honest. She is forever banned from crate blankets!

    I'll look at the bully pads today.

    Bully pads ordered :)

    I've upped the ante with crate games (really good drippy treats and more frequent games). I have Simon's crate open in here in my office and basically I'm watching and treating whenever either of them go in. I'm jackpotting when they are both in at the same time.

    Wheels are turning in little basenji skulls.

    I love bully pads, they hold up really well. I got them based on suggestions from the forum. I really like crate pads that are only one piece like this (versus the kind with a zipper cover) for cleaning.

    Thought I'd share an interesting observation I made after some mat or "go to place" training with Zoni. After I did that for only a short period of time she seemed to generalize it quickly to crates. She has been fine in crates in the car previously (typical show dog behavior I guess) but not so much in the house (she normally stays in a kennel in the basement). After this observation, I was having a hard time getting her out of the crate sometimes and she would just fly into it whenever we went by one in the house. Kinda funny and pretty fortuitous since she has needed to sleep in a crate recently.

    Edit: And the relaxation protocol mentioned on the forum previously may help as well.

    She has a Kong and a chewy squeaker in there with her… Most of the time she has is tired out by the time we put her in there... It's weird b/c all of the times we've had incidents she had plenty of play time before the crate... our weekly morning routine is that i feed her and take her our before work and she gets back in bed with zack and sleeps another hour or so before he goes to work... She never chews anything during this type of routine... Seems to be happening on weekends on days off from work.

    It's true, I've never had to even think about crating until I got Oakley. All previous breeds were no problem staying loose in the house, oak is very house destructive so that was a no go, we also went through crate phobia but at 16 months he tolerates it better than I ever imagined

    As some of you may recall, I had HORRIBLE problems getting Keoki to crate – took me until he was 9 mos old {and three crates!!} before he would sleep at night at all w/out screaming and shredding his bedding. For him, the issue was NOT crating, but separation. I could put him in the crate and while wasn't crazy about it, he would lie down and go to sleep as long as I was in the room w/him. As soon as I moved to leave, he would go absolutely insane. X-pen didn't work either as he tore his nose up while moving the pen across the floor. I finally bought a large crate {-a great dane could be comfy in our current crate} and we crate Keoki and Jazz together. Jazz would prefer to be alone, but she has always been a dog that rolls with the punches, so she does fine. Keoki now runs to his crate if I just say, "Go to bed". They go to bed at 10 PM and although I open the crate door at 5:30 AM, the seldom come out before 9 AM. I can crate them when guests are over if necessary {Jazz gets uncomfortable if too many people are over}, when we go out, and all night w/no complaints. {I am home all day, most days}. My family says he still whines at the window for a few minutes any time I leave the house, which is funny to me because he doesn't seem to be particularly attached to me when we're all home together although both dogs seem to know that I am THE MAMA and they behave best and listen most to me. I wonder how often the dog's anxious behavior in crates is like Keoki - not a crating problem, but a separation anxiety issue.

    @Lesco: We got her from Debbie Hauri in New Hampshire Welcome and congrats on your new pup…how exciting! Is this one of the pups from the Tango & Dora breeding? One thing that I did when I brought my pup home last winter was set up a crate, a litter box (with wood shaving pellets - equine pine) and put an xpen around it (also had a top on the xpen). That way when Liyah was crated for an extended time when I wasn't home, if she had to potty she could use the litter box. It was a great setup and consequently she never went to the bathroom in her crate...sometimes she partially missed the litterbox, but she was just a baby so I was happy she did as well as she did. I left the crate door open with treats, toys and soft bedding so she would choose on her own to go in the crate to sleep. I clipped the xpen closed. If you have space, I highly recommend this sort of setup so that your pup can keep her crate clean. The only other thing I would add is don't hesitate to contact Debbi with questions. She is a wonderful person, super helpful and a good breeder. Not to mention she is a good trainer so I'm sure she'd have plenty of tips. Please post pics when you get a chance...we love pics!

    @luvsmy2bs: Have things gotten any better? Just curios,,,,,,I was reading your post and felt really sorry for you. Currently I have turned my dd's bedroom – thankfully she's away at college -- into a kennel. There is a 6 x 4' ex-pen w/top taking up the entire floor space of her room. Both Jazzy's and Keoki's crates are in there. At night he sleeps okay in that ONLY as long as BOTH crates remain open into the pen. If I close either crate, he flips out. During the day when we have to go out, as yesterday and today, I have to remove all "real" bedding and leave just paper toweling. Yesterday I made the mistake of leaving a small piece of carpet UNDER Jazzy's crate, and when we got home it had been pulled out and torn to shreds. It is obvious that he still wigs out, even in the large pen w/Jazz as today I noticed that the front of his crate {above the door, which was open} has been all chewed up, even though he was not shut in. Still working with the behaviorist; she and the vet are thinking long-term meds may be in order. That is still being discussed. He's going to hurt himself one day if we don't get a handle on this...and eventually dd is going to be home from college; then what? We can't travel with him like this either.
