Uh-oh!

Basenji Talk
  • Lat night and tonight Goober has been vigilent over the window over looking the street. I think he is a racist because whenever a black person walks past he says "Ruh-Roh!" like Scooby-Doo. I'll try to get a recording of it for you guys.

  • When I came home today from work Sahara greeted me at the car. Well, we are walking to the back door and Sahara sees my cat sitting on the line where the underground fence starts. Sahara was doing her roo thing in the play stance, and the cat was looking at her like as if to say, "What's wrong with you, don't you see I am sleeping!!!!!!" It was to funny, she is making that sound more these days. She wanted to chase that cat real bad. haha!!!!!

  • That's funny, because isn't the breed from Africa?

Check out Spring Willow Kennels! That's where we got our Basenji, Remus, from Laurie and she was great. She's not far from Cleveland!

haha that reminds me that some people think they are shorthaired shiba's and sometimes when my basenjis put their backhairs up ( like you all know they do often ) some people think it is a ridgeback :D and about the mini border collies….well if people decide to buy a Basenji because of that , they will definately need a shrink when they find out how a basenji is in contradiction to a borden collie hahaha

Often dogs don't know WHERE to go, in a new place. So, take them out every 3 hrs and treat/praise with proper elimation. Also, keep the areas of the apt your not in, closed. Keep the dog with you, and if you see the nose down, take it out. This should pass as the dog gets more settled. We travel a lot with our dogs, and we keep them with us in motel rooms, with closets, bathrooms shut. When they act like they are sniffing, we take them out. Also, extra exercise with your b will help. Good luck

I agree about making your entrance and exit as much of a non event as possible.
  • Oh, I forgot to crate you up?

Thank you JoeyQ for getting this thread back on topic :) Not that puppy mill/responsible breeding isn't a good thread… :p and there might be one on this very forum. Nice to see so many Basenjis that go against (somewhat) the stereo-types. I feel lucky because Jenny was a 7 month old shelter dog - stray - and really must have had a good upbringing because she has always been very handle-able (one of my friends picked her up and stacked her show dog style the first time he met her) and really only fussed (like the dickens!) in the crate the first night or two. I would remind those who are having difficulty crating: your emotions are a factor in how your dog reacts and adapts. The stress of hearing their cries, and worse, often puts an owner on edge enough to subtly (and often not so subtly to most dogs) encourage the behavior. Earplugs help.:o

I like Adams flea shampoo. It kills the buggers and leaves the animals hair soft. Haven't used it on my Basenji though, as we just haven't had fleas here for a few years.
