Luxor insists…

  • My totally insane 1yr old says we need some more friends. I guess running all the off-leash parks in town isn't enough! This guy loves snow, swims and will mimic a bark from time to time. We are going to switch from Iams smart puppy to big boy food. Any suggestions? Also, all Basenji fans must see a 1956 American film called "Good-Bye, My Lady" with Walter Brennen and Brandon deWilde. When you have stopped crying, research the story of the dog they used. It is truly amazing and confirms what an amazing breed we all love.

  • Do you know if that info on the dog is available online? I haven't seent he movie yet. Good suggestion for a movie for this weekend. Thanks.

  • Mark I have the book & it's so sweet!! I didn't know they had a movie..thanks for sharing that info with us. I can't wait to find it. I guess its dinner & a movie for me & the Bs this weekend :D

  • I haven't been able to see the movie yet or read the book, but I intend to see it. I researched and my Bella is distantly related to the dog(s) in the movie! Of course it is only about 18 generations back… LOL :D There was more than one basenji used as the main character, so I've heard (all siblings).

  • I've seen the movie, if you haven't it's a must…..........I haven't been able to find a copy of the movie.

  • I too have seen the movie (and cried my beady little eyes out sniffle). I am fortunate to have a friend in California who sent me her copy to borrow. I was very reluctant to send it back, however - ;)  :D

  • Yes, I've read the article, isn't it amazing? Thanks for sending it on, lets share it around! Thank you again.

  • They'll love the soundtrack! A-wowowowoooooo

  • He's adorable…I love the pictures! That movie and book are the reason I have a Basenji today. I haven't seen it recently, but I know it's out there...thanks for sharing the story about the dog!

If you ever see a copy of it for sale, please let us know. Anyone.:)

  • We got the movie after getting Jazzy - I'd never heard of it, but Bryan mentioned it. I managed to find it online and ordered a copy.
I know it's a sweet story, but my kids found themselves laughing at a lot of it. They thought it rather "hokey" {esp. the crying}.
I'm not sure it would have inspired me to get a Basenji. The sort of photos and stories we share here are what drew me to the breed.

Still, it's neat that it brought the Basenji to the attention of people . . .

  • Check out online Amazon has used VHS copies for sale!! Check i t out. Mine is already on order :)

I am not in your area, but ... you should know that dog training is about teaching you how to interact with your dog, as opposed to teaching your dog how to do things. Most area Kennel Clubs offer training where you are your dogs partner in the class. The things you will learn will last your lifetime. I applaud the non-punitive approach. A lot of people fly off the handle when their dog chews on the wrong thing, or doesn't quite have potty training down. One of the best things you can do is give them love when they do it right and don't react when they don't. Recognize that he's just a pup. You can trade an acceptable chew toy for your shoes, and you can avoid the problem by closing the closet door so your pup can't get to your shoes. Accidents will happen and learning to potty doesn't happen overnight. Just provide a lot of verbal love when the pup gets it right and don't react when he doesn't. Love and praise are the best tools in your training bag. Congrats on your pup. Can't wait to hear about all of your adventures!
