Cryosurgery/cryotherapy for Pets in SF Bay Area South Bay?

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • My Cosmo has a small lump in her ear. Took her to the vet and they took a sample of it. The vet called back and said the ctytology results seems to show its benign but can't say for sure that it is. Anyway, she said it's okay to remove it. However, my vet can only do it using anesthesia which I don't want to do. I asked about what about just freezing it then removing it. She said there are places that do that but their office doesn't. And she didn't know of any vets that do this (she's a new vet - she's only been in that office for about a month).

So, I wanted to check the B Forum to see if anyone knows of any Veterinarians in the SF Bay Area in the South Bay that does cryosurgery?

[For reference, Cryosurgery (cryotherapy) is the application of extreme cold to destroy abnormal or diseased tissue.]

  • Did you ever find a place that does this, if so what was your experience?

  • How about local anesthesia - Binti had a lump removed near a nipple with just local anesthesia - worked fine.

I didn't get this done. It eventually disappeared from her ear though I can't remember how long. I think I just keep putting an ice cube on that lump every so often.

When I checked about cryosurgery, Adobe Animal Hospital (in Los Altos) does this type of surgery and this place has a good reputation albeit expensive so it would help if you have pet insurance.

  • I'll check it out, thanks!

Alex, did you find a vet in the Bay Area (or somewhere in the South Bay) who specializes in dental work for B's? Pat (Tanza), do you know any vet near the South Bay who specializes in dental work for B's? My B has a cracked tooth/molar which I found and took a photo, showed it to my vet and he suggested tooth extraction. Since he missed it during the physical last week and he hasn't even suggested an x-ray or something to confirm if extraction is the only option (he seems to just base it on the photo and nothing else), I'm suspicious and would like a second opinion from another vet. (I did ask for blood work and the vet said the results are fine, no issues.) Your help is appreciated!

@smharr4: I also have a Care Credit card (http://www.carecredit.com/) which will allow me to pay the bill at the vet immediately, then I can just transfer the money between bank accounts (which takes a few days) so the Care Credit card is payed off before any interest accrues. At least one of our local vets also has a 'promissory note' payment scheme where you pay half when you pick up your pet then spreads the rest out over 3-4 months, that can come in handy too sometimes. Thanks for the tip. I will ask my vet if he has any 'promissory note' scheme. That sounds good, and…yes it would come in handy!

Just putting it out there…check with your car or homeowners company. They may offer it but not really advertise and you might get a break on price if you are already a client. I've seen commercials for Progressive auto that says that they automatically insure your pet as part of the auto policy. Don't know any details, just a commercial I've seen.
