Crate training issues

  • Hello, I am the proud owner of my first basenji. She is 10 weeks old and her name is Zoey.

I am using the crate training method to house break her. I have successfully used it in the past with other breeds of dogs and understand how it works. My problem is my family.

I work nights, 7pm to 7am three nights/week. Zoey has only had one accident in the house while I've been home, however, she's had a few while I'm at work because neither my children or my husband watch her nearly as closely as I do. I don't have any carpet in my house so I'm not really worried about her ruining anything. I'm just worried that everytime they don't catch her it's a huge set back in her training.

I feel like the hours I'm at work are totally out of my controll. How much of a set back do you think each accident is?

  • Hi and welcome. Who did you get your little girl from? Many of us are related by our Basenjis.

And LOL, seem you are between a rock and a hard place… If she gets it right 75% of the time, you will be OK, especially once she is old enough to hold her bladder. Just impress on the family it is important... and keep on with what you are doing.... sounds to me like she has a good start and she should do just fine....

  • Thank you. I think we are doing a bit better than 75% so hopefully it wont take forever to train her. I guess when someone asks where I got her they mean the "kennel" name? I'm really new at this, sorry. I guess the correct reply is SunDiata Basenjis.

@NerdyDogOwner: On the topic of pee, I have a question/issue. I have noticed Gizmo seems to quite often have a drop hanging on his penis a lot of the time. Also it's sometimes white, almost as if it's sperm. Now the first thing I thought of was your typical puberty signs, wetdreams etc. since his blanket also has quite a few drops stains on it. Is this normal? Or should I be worried/aware about something else? Possibly just sloughed skin cells.

When you feed him in the crate and close do you walk away? I had a foster that was terrified of the crate and also suffered terrible anxiety w/peeing in the crate too. So I would feed him in the crate and then close the door and sit right there with him. At first I only closed the door half way, did that way for about a week then was able to close it all the (without latching) for another week. I would sit right next to the crate and praise him for eating his meals. Then I would scoot a few feet back at one meal, move back at the next and do that for a for a few times. Then I would stay at the few feet back. It is a slow process but it really really helped him in his crate training process and getting him over his fear. I was soon able to feed him in his crate and walk away. He was running to his crate and sitting for his meals. He still had his anxiety for long periods w/the peeing problem but we even worked on that were we could leave for short times and he wouldn't pee in his crate

Yes husbands can be a trial at times. When my Kalya was dying from lymphoma hubby said no dogs for awhile! Kalya left on tues. for the bridge, on sat. we got a Basenji/Aussie mix, who was gonna be put down, and then3 months later got Mata Hauri Samuel to co-own. Now hubby is going in sept to the BOCA to see the african exhibit and meet some friends. Said he would love to at least see a tri! ggggg Carole
