LOL CAUTION DO NOT LIFT UP THE COVERS. Einstein slept with us….surprise....oh man, he would stink himself out. We knew it was him when he'd crawl out from under the covers, sniff, shake, and lay back down on top of the covers. 'LiL Stinker doesn't even begin to describe him and his stinky hiney.

RE: Basenji Escape Prevention
For "door bolters" I didn't read all the post's so this may be duplicate info. Got a new catalog in the mail today from Hammacher Schelmmer, they have escapee deterent that I thought was a clever idea for certain applications here's a link http://www.hammacher.com/Product/79916?promo=Home-Living-Pets&catid=142
It's not practical for a heavliy used door, but maybe a front door, UPS, FEDex delevery etc…you could probably rig something yourself if you're handy. The "not being able to see" may help or not......the nosey nellies.
Maybe the person who designed the product has a B too ....ha ha ha

RE: Feet stomping anyone?
"Snoozy Cuddles" Mango I love that. Makes me smile. Cuteness factor, I hear that!!! My husband would say that all the time about our boy Einstein; he had ( Einstein, not my husband) swirly curls of hair on each one of his "bum" cheecks…....good thing too, 'cause he was very naughty when he was a puppy, you couldn't get too mad tho.....when the swirls match the curl in his tail.

RE: Feet stomping anyone?
Yep, I had a stomper also. The little stinker would sit, waiting for whatever it was that he wanted, (that I would not give him) as he would become inpatient, he would stomp his feet and "huff" at the same time. If he could speak, it would probably go something like " Ahhh, HELLLOO, I'm still waiting!!!! I want what I want and I want it now. Look at me!!! stomp, huff. I'm cute you know. Then I'd get a pathetic funny little whimper.
Oh, let's not forget that he would also H I T me.
I sure do miss my boy Einstein.

RE: Poop help needed
Hi Sharon
Could you try a different dog food? How 'bout some plain non-fat yogurt? I remember giving my Einstein a cooked beef bone (the round ones, shank??) with the marrow in the center…...oh , my poor boy cried......the marrow made it very painful for him to go. I had to limit how much he ate. It was a special treat for him, so he didn't get them often.....that helps the anal glands for sure.
Just a couple ideas. Need daily "poop reports"

p.s. you're lucky you can find pumpkin!!! -

RE: Unsupervised Walkabout
Fran they are fence extension kits. The ones I looked at were inward leaning.
This one has ones at horizontal level but the ones I looked at 10 yrs ago were 45 degrees
http://www.dogsdeservebetter.com/clova.htmlThis one uses barbed wire, but you can use plain wire or fencing
http://www.inetdesign.com/wolfdunn/containment/barbarms.htmlDo the barbed wire ones come with a guard tower and spot lite???? :p reminds me of the tv show (long time ago) Hogan's Heros and all the things they did to escape. B's certainly are determined little stinkers. I think I learned that the day we brought our boy home. Wouldn't have 'em any other way, right:rolleyes: Naughty and funny at the same time.
Oh my goodness Robyn, Raine is just TOO CUTE. For sure, calender material!! -
RE: Pongo in Winfield WV shelter
Hi Patty
No I didn't see Hattie. I need to look on craigs list more often. I guess I'm a little leary (sp) about the ads on there, never know if they're legit or not. This one, however, does legit; don't ya think??
I'll also email her, let her know I'm a BRAT volunteer and that I'm here in Pgh.
Thank you for the info

RE: Boarding over christmas holidays

Oh my, how awful. I hope they put that animal abuser in a cage to see how it feels. I can totally understand why you wouldn't want to kennel her!!! Unthinkable, how cruel some people are.
The way we got around putting Einstein in a kennel was taking seperate vacations. How dysfunctional is that I'd go to FLa to visit the folks, then later on my husband would go fishing. Who ruled the roost??? Not that I'm suggesting you change your plans etc…... just that look at the lengths we go thru for our 4 legged kids.
Oh I wished you lived closer to Pgh. I am a BRAT transport volunteer and "temporary" foster, (term used loosely) At Camp PJ, I get the dog and keep them with me 1-2 wks until other transport volunteers can get their schedule worked out. I have fallen in love every single time.....
Maybe because your oldest was a BRAT and the condition in which she was rescued from, someone will open their hearts, oh I mean home to your two fur-babes.

Darn it. It was just a thought. I'm very very good at giving hugs and kisses, if I do say so myself, 24/7 if they want. I hope the weather co-operates for you.
My boy Einstein was 13yo and I couldn't dream of his spoiled self in a kennel…......"What no sun to sleep in". Maybe someone on the BRAT Facebook page has an idea??

RE: Pokey and Puca
Patty
I'm sad to learn of your little Lucy girl; they teach us so many lessons about love, don't they.? She must have worked her magic to provide the opportunity for you to come in contact with her "litter" of rescues. Lucy knew they would be in good loving arms.
It certainly is the time of year when we give thanks for our blessings, but I think every day an impish Basenji makes us smile is a day to be grateful for.

RE: Pokey and Puca
Oh, I can't EVEN imagine the pain she must be going thru. Just the thought makes me sick to my stomach. My heart breaks for her. I would never be able to get over the thoughts that would be going thru my mind, knowing what they must have gone thru. How absolutely, …..I don't know what word to use.
Time does not heal, I think I grieve more now for my boy than I did almost a year ago when I had to let him run free. Grief has taken his place. If you stop grieving , then what ?????? Their personalities are bigger than life.

RE: Won't allow me to inject insulin, is afraid of me.
Dale
Are you using Vetsulin insulin???? I had problems regulating my 13yo male. Come to find out, the FDA has warned vets to change dogs over to a different kind of insulin. Has something to do with the release time of the crystalline portion of the drug.
We had the WORST time at first giving shots,( and I'm a certified phlebotomist and went thru nursing school) My boy was fine at the vets we they did it…..difference is he was up on the exam table. We got a table for Einstein, put a bath mat on it so he wouldn't slip around. Biggest thing that helped was getting BD needles, the ones that come from the vets are carp-ola, they have burrs etc...the only thing you have to do is change the number of units you use.(if your using Vetsulin U40 compared to U100 for human insulin and BD needles.) I can explain in further detail if you want.
It did take both myself and my husband to get him used to the shots, be we had a very specific routine that we did not alter. Einstein knew that after he ate it was "time for his medicine" he would run over to his table and try to jump up there himself. If we were taking too long, he'd come get us. Freezed Dried Liver was used to get him on the table, then when he was done, given while he was still on the table. I made sure he could see the liver. When he was done and off the table, he got his (small) KONG filled with fat free cream cheese mixed with some tuna mmmmmmmm. My little puppy-cat loved tuna. Anyway, I went from crying during the shot, to smiling and laughing 'cause he was so funny trying to get on the table, and then doing his little dance when he got his kong. I really think the table helped...
Please let me know if I can help any more, I can describe the contraption (sp) I built on top of his metal crate, so I could give the shot by myself when needed.
He didn't seeem to mind getting the shots at all, I think he trusted and knew we would never do anything to hurt him, plus we made a HUGE DEAL out of telling him what a good boy he was....etc......people would have thought we were bananas LOL
Good Luck

RE: Dandruff…
My two cents worth. I even use this when it gets my hair/scalp gets a little dry. As a final rinse I use "drinkable" aloe vera gel (unflavored and 99% pure) that I get from GNC here in the U.S. then I add just 2-3 drops of tea tree oil (sometimes not) and just glop it on, it's kind of thick. Let it sit for a sec….then I rinse. I keep it in the fridge. It feels WONDERFUL on a sunburned head. Anyway, I figured both are safe for human consumption, so if the dirty little buggers want to help you dry them off, it won't hurt them. As I'm sure you know saba, tea tree oil is an anti-fungal, anti-septic, anti-microbial, etc.. it's even in toothpaste and mouthwash. A little of it goes a long way.
I'm glad they seem to be getting better.

Hi
Are you going to be driving when you go to your parents? If so, what direction?? Pittsburgh way perhaps or 1/2 way in that dirrection? -
RE: Pongo in Winfield WV shelter
I have an update on Pongo. I picked him up on Nov. 6th in the Charleston, WV area (the sweet boy slept the entire 3hr ride). I kept him with me for a week until J.R. Key was able to take him. J.R. had him "vetted" etc…. Pongo may be on the BRAT site as early as this weekend??? The Petfinder pix did not do this boy justice. He is very handsome. He has the softest coat. Loves to show off his belly. Pongo is very calm in the house, he has very nice manners. He was the only dog/pet in a 2 adult mellow household. He was never alone, so no need to crate him. HE NEVER STOLE A SINGLE THING. When coming up behind him, I asked him if I could have his "stinky stick" (aka Bully Stick), the first time he dropped it and showed me his belly. A little while later, I tried again, just when it was good and slimy, he dropped it, got up and walked away. No grumping at all. He pulls when he walks. even with a harness on. He is a very quick learner tho. Only took a few times to train him to ring the bells to go out to potty. He is a great dog, not a spaz. I hope he finds a nice home, he deserves it, and he would be very grateful. Can you tell I miss him

RE: Kid's toys are not for doggies
What a horrible sad story. I originally came on the forum to post something I saw on Overstock.com. I was trying to find the correct section to post it in. At first I thought I'd make a funny comment like "a stuffless" toy animal for a B, how cruel. Ripping the stuffing out, and trying to spit it off their tongue is cute to watch; my boy used to LOVE destuffing. Never ever gave it a thought. He never ate the stuffing and I watched him when he''d get the squeaker out then I'd take it away so he wouldn't choke.
Then I read this story. Wow. Here's the link to overstock for the toys. Skinneeez Stuffingless Dog Toys[URL="http://http://www.overstock.com/Gifts-Flowers/Skinneeez-Stuffingless-Dog-Toys/4420132/product.html?rcmndsrc=2"

RE: 3 y/o female in KY shelter with limited time
Sharon, thank you for your kind words regarding the loss of my "Boy". My heart is broken, I still talk to him (as he is, was the only one who really listens ) Time heals I hope. So far, not so much.
I would love to help out BRAT and the breed in any way I can, thank you for the suggestion. This will be part of the healing process, as I can't bear the thought of any Basenji without a home or a soft couch, blanket and slave to call their own.
I will contact BRAT this evening.
BaRoo to you

RE: 3 y/o female in KY shelter with limited time
Hi Sharon
Thank you so much for your quick response.
I am still grieving the loss of my 13 y/o B. boy "Einstein" (and not very well I might add) We had to let him let him "run free, to run like the wind" Jan 12, 2010.
He had just turned 13 on Dec 8th (b.1996) Einstein had developed diabetes about a year or so ago. In addition to a mass on his thyroid which had begun to produce hormones, it was also constricting his swallowing. He went into Diabetic Acidosis.
I was exteremly lucky that I was able to be with him 24/7. I had just finished nursing school when he got sick. My husband, the best, agreed that it would be best for the "bubbie" if he a full-time caretaker.
He was always my boy, but now he was my entire life…I didn't do anything without thinking of him first.
Well anyhow, sorry for the sob story, I tourture myself everyday by going on the internet looking at and for Basenji's, just happened to notice this poor petite little girl Sally-Mae needs a home. I live in Pittsburgh, Pa so it's a bit too far, but I certainly can help with transporting at anytime. We have 2 vehicles that accomodate crates, Honda CR-V and Subaru wagon.
Thank you again for alerting the proper person about Sally-Mae.
