RE: Couch scuffing
She she definitely nests on the couch when we aren’t home. We have a very open floor plan so we can’t “lock her out”...

Couch scuffing
We are in need of a new couch. Our 6 year old basenji loves to scuff the throw pillows and make a nest. The new couch we really want is a leather couch no throw pillows. Has any other basenji owner had any luck training their 4 legged love to not scuff or dig on a couch? Or do you own a leather couch and a basenji successfully without the couch being ruined. Yes we would also put a couch cover on it. Thanks

RE: Dry, flaky skin
@eeeefarm
She had anal gland problem when she was young, but has outgrown that thankfully. She has a “wet dog” smell sometimes......but someone mentioned the “frito feet”. LOL. She does get that for sure. We use dog wipes for her feet.... -
RE: Dry, flaky skin
Thank you..just to clarify we don't bathe her alot..maybe every 4-5 weeks in warmer months..

Dry, flaky skin
Hi All..our poor girl has very dry skin. I have tried numerous shampoos and nothing works. I even will brush a small amount of coconut oil thru her fur. Anyone have a certain shampoo they can recommend. I’m also thinking of changing her food to one with a higher fat content. Lastly, she has never been “odorless”. Wondering if anyone else experiences this. I see comments of others saying their babies are not stinky... lol. My poor baby

RE: Crate/seperation axiety- help!
We went thru the same with our Bruwinn. She is 4. Despises the crate..hates to be alone....we put her on same Prozac dose and tried every calming item on the market. we would leave her for small amounts of time and come back...15 mins, 20, half hour) so she wouldn’t know how long she would be alone...and of course leave treats everywhere...(ours is very good motivated) It eventually worked .......and then she had a dental procedure at the vet this winter and they crated her for the day .we had no idea...and we are back to square one again. She was crying, peeing in the house, and so anxious...The entire thing was heartbreaking. Prozac and rescue remedy every day again, but she is doing better. She does growl if someone approaches one of us when she is on couch...really working on stopping this as she snaps at my niece but only if we are on couch w her......give it some time. Good luck

Crazy puppy (1yr) not calming down at all
Hi we are in need of some basenji support and advise…our 1 yr old female is seemingly getting more and more crazy and even a bit aggressive with us. A bit about her situation.... She is crate trained while we are at work and we understand that this will cause her to be a bit hyper when we get home. We also live in mass and she is resisting walking in the cold so she is not getting a ton of excecise. We put her in daycare twice a week to get her out of the crate, but she does not get playtime with other dogs there. She is non stop ...she has chewed our dining room chairs, dug couch cushions, torn thru 3dog beds, and will not stop biting the cat. The cat does not seem afraid of her and even tries to sleep in her bed, but since she is getting aggressive we are nervous. She will bite us also when she wants to play, and we know she is not trying to be mean, but she is very very strong. She had 4 rounds of training as a puppy up until this past November, each one was 7 weeks. She still will not come when we call her, and does not listen when we say no. We have no contact with her breeder as when we got her she was very very sick and we were very upset with them. We told this breeder everything about our home situation, and our plans for the dog. He said she would be fine in a crate, with a cat, and that she is very trainable. We lovelovelovelove our baby, but can not leave her in a room for 1 minute alone. She does not have run of the house, just living room and kitchen..very open space. Is this still puppy behavior? Will a basenji become calmer as they get older? She also seems to have separation anxiety and we give her rescue remedy, but our vet says she may need something stronger. The last thing in the world we want is to have to find another home for her, but it is getting really really hard ...please, any thoughts, advice, ...and prayers...are welcome.... So sad right now....

My poor pup is limping here and there
Hi…for a few weeks off and on our Brewinn has been limping. It was not too often at first and we initially we thought sh kept lifting it cuz she's a big baby and gates the cold floor. In the last week now it's gotten worse - but when the dust goes by her, or she has her "fee" time she goes like crazy. She jumps on him and off and on the couch - no crying or yelping. In the last 2 days we are trying to restrict her playing and running.as much as we can. We noticed that once and a while we hear a pop near her knee/thigh are. Similar to when someone cracks a knuckle. It is her rear left leg. We did make a vet appointment, but wanted some thought from all the more knowledgeable basenji owners. We know it's not broken, but are still worried..any thought are spore instead. Thanks

RE: Spontaneous peeing
We are so afraid of fanconi disease. Would that develop this young?
we did not hsve a good breeder. Never provided information on
heritage etc. -
Spontaneous peeing
For the past week our 10 mos basenji Bruwinn us having accidents, and will spontaneous pee. One day she had just been out and did her business. She jumped on the couch and was digging at the blanket, while she was digging she was peeing at the same time. It happened two more times on the couch within 5 days. Then last night she was just "running around" during her free time in the house. It was only about half hour since she had been out. Mid walk she just started peeing all over while she was walking…we don't even think she realized she was going. Normally I would think she has a uti or bladder infection but she will go all night without an accident. She is also crated during the day. She is usually really good, no accidents. We were thinking could she have a yeast infection, or we heard that even if she is spayed she could show some signs of being in heat, but font know what they would be. Any help or thoughts would be appreciated.

RE: 9mos..biting really bad…will not listen..
At Tanza..I don't want to call out the breeder..but she had giardi…bad...and we think influenza and kennel cough. She was just 4lbs, and very very sick. We spent a lot of money since March at the vet....but finally..she is healthy. She went through a lot we actually thought she may not make it. We researched the breed for over a year and had many many many conversations with our breeder, and other basenji breeders trying to make sure we could provide a good home for her. I do think that because we work all day, that maybe we were not the best family for a basenji, but our breeder assured us that a basenji would be fine crated. We do put her into daycare once a week to get her out. I can not even think of giving her up. We took a vacation and missed her so much we wanted to go home early......, but the biting is really awful. We do take her for a good walk when we get home, and also she gets 15 mins of playing ball, toss, etc. after dinner, along with 5 min trainings....

RE: 9mos..biting really bad…will not listen..
Thank you all…we have her in enrolled in professional training classes...the trainers all seem educated, but the classes are full, and they keep telling us " you picked a really tough breed". Not what we need to keep hearing. She was very sick when we got her, so we have no contact with the breeder...this also kept her out of class until 14 wks.. I will lcertainly look into the link posted by "agile". I also just ordered a training book that has internet access to ask questions of the trainer that wrote it.. We were told to buy a book called "ruff love"... But the reviews of it were awful. Crate games also sounds interesting. We will do anything to keep her. I hope we can get this biting stopped. Thanks..

9mos..biting really bad…will not listen..
We have a 9mos old female. We have had her in training and are on our 3rd session. She does better at home…and I see from older posts that others have had the same issue with the distraction on class....but she will not listen at all...and is "deaf" to our voices. We can call her over and over or tell her no, and she does not even respond a little. She also has started to bite a lot. When she is frustrated or wants our attention she will bite..but then continues to lunge at you. If you say no, or cry out like u are hurt, she will bite harder...like it's a game. She also is getting very aggressive with the biting and chasing of the cat. We are afraid she will get his throat. I have read so much, tried so many things with her...I am looking for any out of the ordinary suggestions. My husband is ready to put her up for adoption. He is very afraid she will hurt one of our young nieces, or even just bite someone. We love this puppy, and don't want to lose her, but are desperate. Thank you

RE: Sick basenji puppy - awful cough since we got her
Thank you…X-rays were clear. Now on minocycline since last Thursday and seems to be helping a little so far. Thank you for the feedback....we thought about going to angel memorial or tufts if she does not get better after this round.

Sick puppy
Please..we our first time basenji owners and our poor girl has been sick since we got her in March. She is 6 mos old and has had a rough go fighting giardia, influenza, uti, and what was being treated as kennel cough from the day we got her. We now know it's not kennel cough. She has this awful awful cough that happens worse in the middle of the night after she has slept for a few hours. It starts around 2-3 hrs after we put her to bed. After she has been awake for a while it will stop but will happen once in a while throughout the day. We have had 3 rounds of antibiotics and done X-rays. They now say we have to do a tracheal flush that is about $1200. If anyone has any experience similar please let us know. We almost think it could be a nervous cough, but then think it would not get worse in middle of night. Thank you
