Oddly, my boy loves being in the rain! The harder itβs raining, the longer he walks. I figure it brings out his hunting instinct even stronger.

RE: Stylin' in the rain
@slents I know! My Jessey has a Lands End coat as well - with his name embroidered - they are great! I can't upload an image though - tells me the file is too big sighhhhh.

RE: Overlooking my kingdom
Yep! My Jessey drives me crazy with wanting to be out all summer, but mommy is a heat lover as well, so it works great. He has his own chair in the sun. And in the winter - he has a heated pillow I put in his bed. He's toasty warm and very happy!

RE: Liver values
In 2017 my six year old Basenji boy's liver numbers jumped to almost 900! Absolutely no explanation. A scan was done and the doctor said the liver looked "grainy" but still no explanation.
He was checked two months later - and every year since (he's 9.5 now) - and numbers have been completely normal. So strange! One thought was perhaps he had walked through grass that had been fertilized/treated somehow and it affected the liver until being processed out.

RE: Basenji Breeders in Northeast America
@zande Hi. How cool! He is there - #53 - Marjani's Hunters Run.

RE: Basenji Breeders in Northeast America
The Basenji.org page is out of date. I got my wonderful Jessey from Julie Hartigan - Marjani Basenji in 2011 - her page has not listed puppies since 2014 and the site itself is out of date. Thinking she gave up breeding?

RE: Why Wonβt My Basenji Poop for Me
I just have to say that I am glad to find out that Basenji's are ones to not poo on command. Mine can hold it and hold it and HOLD IT which I always found strange. Now I know it's "normal". He also likes to be discreet about it. They certainly are quirky but I wouldn't have any other breed!
And just to comment on the rain - he's a not normal Basenji! That's when he walks the longest and farthest, I figure it somehow brings out the hunt instinct in him. I know any time it's pouring, I'm in for an hour walk. On a bright and sunny day, it's out the front door - survey the surroundings - back inside. Go figure!

RE: Age of your basenji?
My first love was 11 when he passed but he had health issues. His hocks had fallen and he walked on "feet" - like a person. He also had a growth protruding from his rear that was most likely cancer; congestive heart failure too. UGH.
My current love turned eight in January and is healthy, has his smarts, chases squirrels, cats, deer, etc., and runs the B-500! I am thinking/praying he will live a very long life.
As far as muzzles - I used to have to put one on at the vet, but now he doesn't mind her poking and prodding. But being a typical Basenji, he growls at whatever displeases him - even if it's his mommy or daddy. That used to intimidate us with our first baby, this one we just say "REALLY?" and laugh.
